Chapter 1: The Recording

The doorbell rang again.
No one moved.
Claire lay on the kitchen floor, her breath shallow, her legs burning so badly she could barely think. Beside her, her phone glowed against the hardwood, still connected to emergency services.
And still recording.
Meredith stared at the screen as if it were a loaded gun.
Daniel turned slowly toward his sister. “Meredith,” he said, his voice thin. “Tell me you didn’t.”
Meredith’s mouth opened, but nothing came out.
The doorbell rang a third time. Then came a hard knock.
“Police!”
Evelyn’s face drained of color.
Charles finally stood, but not to help Claire. He moved toward the foyer, smoothing his jacket like appearances still mattered.
Two officers entered with paramedics behind them. The warm Christmas lights, the expensive table setting, the roast smoking on the floor — all of it suddenly looked obscene.
A female paramedic knelt beside Claire. “I’ve got you. Don’t move.”
Claire nodded, tears slipping silently down her face.
One officer looked at Meredith. “Are you the sister-in-law?”
Meredith lifted her chin. “This is a misunderstanding.”
Claire’s voice cut through the room.
“Play the recording.”
Everyone froze.
Daniel picked up the phone with shaking hands. For one second, he looked at Claire as if asking permission. She gave the smallest nod.
Then her own scream filled the kitchen.
The shove.
The crash.
The sound of oil hitting skin.
Then Meredith’s whisper, low and vicious:
“This is what happens when you take my brother from us.”
Daniel’s face broke.
The officer turned to Meredith.
“Ma’am, step away from the doorway.”
Meredith tried to laugh. “You can’t be serious.”

But this time, no one in the Whitmore family defended her.
Not even Evelyn.
