Chapter 4: Truth Comes Home

Three days later, the doorbell rang.
Marcus opened it.
Standing outside was his father.
Edward Harrison.
A man who rarely involved himself in family conflicts.
Until now.
He carried a thin leather folder.
"I listened to the recordings."
Marcus stepped aside.
Edward walked directly to Maya.
"I'm sorry."
She looked surprised.
"You don't owe me an apology."
"I do."
His voice cracked.
"I spent years convincing myself Brenda was merely difficult."
He looked toward Lily, finally sleeping peacefully on the sofa after her fever had broken.
"I didn't realize she had become cruel."
Edward placed the folder on the dining table.
Inside were divorce papers.
Filed that morning.
Maya looked at Marcus.
Neither of them spoke.
Edward continued.
"I've also resigned Brenda from every charitable board funded by the family foundation."
Another document.
"The lake house has been transferred into a children's recovery charity."
Another.
"And your grandmother's jewelry..."
He smiled gently at Maya.
"...belongs to the woman who actually treats this family with love."
Maya immediately shook her head.
"I can't accept that."
"You already have."
Edward glanced toward the kitchen.
"You accepted this family when nobody deserved your kindness."
His eyes became wet.
"My wife mistook generosity for weakness."
"She won't make that mistake again."
Outside, another car pulled into the driveway.
Brenda.
She stormed toward the front door.
But before she could knock...
She saw movers carrying furniture out of the house she had believed would always belong to her.

For the first time in decades...
No one opened the door.
