🚨 CHAPTER 4: THE RUNNING MAN

Outside the ER, the stepdad reached the parking lot.
Rain started falling.
His hands were shaking now.
He opened the trunk of his car.
Inside—
a second set of documents.
Multiple IDs.
Different names.
Same child photo.
He wasn’t a stepdad.
He was assigned.
A handler.
A failure report pinged his phone:
SUBJECT HAS BEEN COMPROMISED
TERMINATE EXTRACTION OR ABORT FACILITY CONTACT
His breathing turned sharp.
Then—
from behind him:
“Sir?”
He turned.
The ER nurse stood at the exit.
Still holding Toby’s chart.
“I need you to come back inside.”
He shook his head.
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.”
Her voice stayed calm.
May you like
“No,” she said.
“I think I finally do.”
