The hospital lights dimmed for emergency protocol.
Doors locked automatically.
A system-wide alert flashed:
UNKNOWN PEDIATRIC CONDITION — ROOM 4B
The nurse slowly lifted the hat again.
This time Toby didn’t resist.
He just stared at the floor.
Under the hat—
was not a wound.
Not an injury.
But a small implanted device behind his ear.
Faint blinking light.
Clinical.
Controlled.
The nurse stepped back instantly.
“No…” she whispered. “This is impossible…”
A doctor rushed in, saw it—
and froze.
“That’s not medical,” he said quietly.
“That’s tracking hardware.”
