Chapter 4: Home Again

Nearly a year later...

Spring sunlight poured across the porch of a quiet lakeside home.

No security tape.

No police cars.

Only peace.

Eleanor sat in a new motorized wheelchair surrounded by blooming roses.

Months of rehabilitation had restored much of her strength.

The fear in her eyes was finally gone.

Jade walked onto the porch carrying lemonade.

She no longer wore a maid's uniform.

She had accepted Ryder's offer to attend nursing school, fully funded by the Mercer Family Foundation.

"You've done enough taking care of us," Ryder had told her.

"Now let us take care of your future."

She graduated first in her class.

Eleanor smiled proudly every time she called her "Nurse Jade."

One afternoon, Ryder found the old blue sewing box while organizing the attic.

He opened it.

The recorder was still inside.

So were the envelopes.

But he quietly closed the lid.

Some evidence belongs in court.

Not in your heart.

He carried the box downstairs.

Together, he, Eleanor, and Jade walked to the fireplace.

The recordings.

The forged documents.

Every reminder of Allison.

Gone.

Reduced to ash.

Eleanor reached over and squeezed Ryder's hand.

"You came home just in time."

He smiled through tears.

"No, Mom."

"I almost came home too late."

Outside, the wind gently carried the ashes into the bright afternoon sky.

The house that had once hidden fear and silence was finally filled with laughter again.

Justice had punished the guilty.

Courage had protected the innocent.

And the family Allison tried so desperately to destroy...

Found each other again.
