Chapter 1: The Blue Sewing Box

The hospital hallway was unnaturally quiet.
Machines beeped behind closed doors.
Nurses hurried past without noticing the man sitting alone outside Room 214, staring at a laptop that had just destroyed his entire marriage.
Ryder couldn't stop replaying the footage.
His mother lying helpless in bed.
Allison standing over her.
Not yelling.
Not losing control.
Calm.
Smiling.
That frightened him more than any rage ever could.
At exactly 2:13 a.m., Allison pulled a syringe from behind her back.
She pressed it into Eleanor's arm.
His mother winced.
Within seconds her eyelids became heavy.
She couldn't move.
Couldn't even raise her voice.
Then Allison leaned close enough for the hidden microphone to capture every word.
"You know why no one believes you?"
She smiled.
"Because by breakfast, you'll forget this ever happened."
The video continued.
Allison opened Eleanor's jewelry box.
She removed several antique diamond brooches.
Placed them into a velvet pouch.
Then looked directly toward the bedroom door.
"Tomorrow," she whispered, "I'll tell Ryder the maid has been stealing from you."
Ryder slammed the laptop shut.
His hands were shaking so violently he nearly dropped it.
Jade hadn't been protecting his mother from one bad afternoon.
She had been protecting her for months.
Suddenly he remembered the blue sewing box.
Leaving the hospital, Ryder drove home alone.
Police crime-scene tape still stretched across the front entrance.
Detective Sarah Collins met him inside.
"You shouldn't be here alone."
"I need one thing."
She nodded.
"I'll come with you."
His mother's bedroom still smelled like lavender.
Everything appeared untouched.
He opened the closet.
Reached toward the top shelf.
Behind neatly folded blankets sat an old blue sewing box with faded white flowers painted across the lid.
It wasn't locked.
Inside...
There wasn't thread.
Or needles.
There were envelopes.
Bank statements.
Medical reports.
And a small voice recorder wrapped carefully inside one of Eleanor's knitted scarves.
Sarah pressed Play.
Allison's voice immediately filled the room.
"If you ever tell Ryder the truth, I'll have Jade arrested for elder abuse."
Another recording.
"You'll sign the power of attorney tomorrow... or you won't eat."
Another.
"If you die before Ryder gets home, everyone will think the stroke finally caught up with you."
Sarah slowly lowered the recorder.
"This isn't elder neglect."
May you like
She looked directly at Ryder.
"This is attempted murder."
