CHAPTER 4 — Justice Falls Harder Than Revenge

Police officers entered through every door.
No one had noticed them waiting outside.
Detective Laura Bennett stepped forward.
"Vanessa Whitmore."
"Eric Lawson."
"You're both under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, insurance fraud, and obstruction of justice."
Eric lunged toward the rear exit.
Daniel Reeves intercepted him with one clean movement, pinning him to the marble floor until officers placed him in handcuffs.
Vanessa looked at Nathan with wild desperation.
"You can't do this to me!"
Nathan answered quietly.
"You already tried to do it to me."
As officers led her away, she screamed.
"You'll die alone!"
Nathan watched without emotion.
"I almost did."
The trial lasted six weeks.
Prosecutors presented surveillance footage, financial records, GPS data, phone messages, and the recorded confession.
Nathan finally testified.
He described the waterfall.
The cold mist.
The moment he realized the woman he loved had chosen his fortune over his life.
The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
Both defendants were found guilty on every major count.
Eric received a lengthy prison sentence.
Vanessa received an even longer one after the court found she had orchestrated the entire conspiracy.
The judge's final words echoed through the courtroom.
"Greed planned this crime."
"But truth survived the fall."
Months later, Nathan returned to the waterfall.
This time, he came alone.
He rolled his wheelchair to the overlook where everything had begun.
The broken railing had been replaced.
Wildflowers grew beside the rocks.
He looked down at the rushing water and closed his eyes.
For months, he had imagined revenge would heal him.
It hadn't.
Justice had.
He opened a folder resting on his lap.
Inside were documents establishing the Whitmore Foundation, dedicated to helping survivors of domestic abuse and attempted homicide rebuild their lives.
He signed the final page.
The fortune Vanessa had tried to steal would now save thousands of lives.
Nathan looked toward the horizon as sunlight broke through the clouds.
Some people spend their lives climbing toward power.
Others lose everything before discovering what truly matters.
He had survived betrayal.
May you like
He had survived the fall.
And at last, he was free.
