CHAPTER 1 — The Man Who Refused to Die

The roar of the waterfall swallowed Nathan Whitmore whole.

Vanessa clutched Eric's arm, forcing tears into her eyes as hikers rushed toward the cliff.

"My husband!" she screamed. "Please! He fell!"

People crowded the edge, but the mist hid everything below.

Then someone shouted.

"Wait... there's movement!"

A rescue worker hiking nearby had already climbed halfway down the rocky slope. Wedged between two ancient pine trees, nearly sixty feet below the cliff, hung a mangled wheelchair.

But Nathan wasn't in it.

"He must have been thrown clear!" the rescuer yelled.

Within minutes, emergency teams arrived.

Vanessa kept trembling on cue, squeezing Eric's hand whenever no one was looking.

They expected to recover a body.

Instead...

A helicopter lifted a stretcher from the ravine.

Nathan Whitmore was alive.

Barely.

His pulse was weak. His ribs were broken. One shoulder was dislocated, and his head was bleeding.

But alive.

As paramedics loaded him into the helicopter, his eyes opened for a brief second.

He looked directly at Vanessa.

Not with fear.

Not with hatred.

Recognition.

Then his eyes closed again.

Vanessa's stomach tightened.

"He... he saw me," she whispered.

Eric forced a smile.

"He's unconscious. He won't remember anything."

But deep inside, neither of them believed it.

Nathan spent twelve days in intensive care.

The police questioned Vanessa several times.

She repeated the same story.

"It was raining."

"The wheelchair slipped."

"I tried to save him."

Everyone pitied the devoted wife who never left the hospital.

Every day she sat beside Nathan's bed holding his hand whenever doctors walked in.

Every night she left smiling.

Because Nathan never woke up.

Until the thirteenth morning.

A nurse hurried into the hallway.

"Mrs. Whitmore?"

Vanessa jumped to her feet.

"Your husband is awake."

She rushed inside, already preparing her performance.

Nathan looked pale, weak, connected to countless machines.

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"What... happened?"

Vanessa immediately burst into tears.

"You fell, darling."

Nathan stared at her for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

A tiny, tired smile.

"I don't remember."

Relief flooded through Vanessa so quickly she nearly laughed.

The head trauma.

Memory loss.

Everything had gone perfectly after all.

The doctors confirmed that Nathan suffered retrograde amnesia involving the accident.

He remembered his childhood.

He remembered building Whitmore Technologies.

He remembered marrying Vanessa.

But the last several days before the fall...

Gone.

Vanessa celebrated silently.

Without Nathan's testimony, the investigation would close.

Eric texted only four words.

We're finally free.

Neither of them knew that Nathan had lied with his very first sentence.

He remembered every second.

Including the moment Eric's hands pushed his wheelchair toward death.

That same evening, while Vanessa slept in the hospital chair, Nathan quietly pressed the hidden emergency button beneath his mattress.

Not for a nurse.

For someone else.

Ten minutes later, an older man wearing a dark suit entered through the private elevator.

Silver hair.

Sharp blue eyes.

Former FBI investigator turned Whitmore family security chief...

Daniel Reeves.

Nathan waited until the room was empty.

Then he spoke.

"I know who tried to kill me."

Daniel's expression never changed.

"I assumed as much."

Nathan slowly looked toward the sleeping Vanessa outside the glass door.

"I want everyone to believe I've forgotten."

Daniel nodded.

"And then?"

May you like

Nathan's eyes became colder than the river beneath the waterfall.

"Help me bury the people who tried to bury me."
