Chapter 12 - THE OFFER
Three days before Lena was scheduled to testify, Malcolm requested a private meeting.
He had accepted a cooperation agreement.
His attorney claimed he possessed information that could protect Lena from fraud charges.
Detective Quinn attended the meeting.
So did a federal prosecutor.
Malcolm entered wearing a gray jail uniform.
Without his tailored suits, he looked smaller.
He placed a folder on the table.
“These are draft documents Victor intended to file after Lena’s arrest.”
Lena opened the folder.
The first document was a psychiatric evaluation.
It claimed she suffered from delusions and paranoid behavior.
The doctor’s signature was forged.
The second document was a petition for emergency guardianship.
Victor planned to argue that Lena was mentally incompetent.
If successful, he would control her legal decisions and assets.
The third document was a confession.
It stated Lena had created the shell companies without Victor’s knowledge.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
It was an expert forgery.
Malcolm watched her read.
“Victor intended to have you arrested after the pension losses became public.”
“When?” Lena asked.
“Within two months.”
“Why did he wait?”
“He needed one more transfer to make the paper trail complete.”
Lena’s stomach turned.
The dinner confrontation had happened just before Victor planned to destroy her.
“What do you want?” she asked.
Malcolm looked at the prosecutor.
“Reduced sentencing.”
“That is between you and the government.”
“I also want Lena to state that I helped her.”
Lena laughed once.
“You helped Victor trap me.”
“I am helping now.”
“Because you were caught.”
Malcolm leaned forward.
“You need my testimony.”
“The jury needs to understand he controlled the accounts.”
“The surviving ledger does that.”
“I can explain every transfer.”
“Then explain it.”
“Will you support leniency?”
“No.”
Malcolm’s face hardened.
“Do you understand what prison will do to someone like me?”
Lena stared at him.
“Did you ask what Victor would do to me when you created a false confession?”
He looked away.
“You treated my life like paperwork.”
“You planned to place me in prison to protect stolen money.”
“You do not get to become brave because the same system finally reached you.”
The prosecutor ended the meeting.
As Lena stood, Malcolm spoke again.
“Victor has one more account.”
She stopped.
“It contains forty-eight million dollars.”
“Where?”
“I will disclose it in court.”
“Why not now?”
“Because information is the only thing I have left.”
Detective Quinn shook her head.
“You still think this is a negotiation.”
Malcolm smiled faintly.
“It always is.”
Two days later, Malcolm was found unconscious in his cell.
