Chapter 11 - HELEN TAKES THE STAND

Helen was the witness Victor feared most.

He understood Richard’s anger.

He expected Lena’s testimony.

But he had always believed his mother’s love would survive any evidence.

Helen entered the courtroom wearing a simple navy dress.

She did not look at Victor until she sat in the witness chair.

The prosecutor asked about the dining room.

Helen described the plate.

She described Lena’s expression.

She described Victor’s panic when the dark-green phone appeared.

“Why did his reaction concern you?” the prosecutor asked.

“Because he did not ask what the phone was.”

“He already knew.”

“What did that tell you?”

“That Lena had been forced to hide evidence from him.”

The prosecutor asked about the lake house.

Helen admitted moving the ledgers.

She admitted ignoring warning signs.

She admitted helping conceal Camille’s accusation decades earlier.

Victor’s attorney rose for cross-examination.

“Mrs. Hale, your relationship with your son became strained after he replaced your husband as chairman, correct?”

“Yes.”

“You resented his success.”

“No.”

“You feared becoming irrelevant.”

“Yes.”

The attorney smiled.

“So your testimony is influenced by bitterness.”

Helen looked at Victor.

“My testimony is influenced by shame.”

The smile disappeared from the attorney’s face.

Helen continued.

“I loved my son more than I loved the truth.”

“I called that loyalty.”

“It was cowardice.”

Victor leaned toward his attorney and whispered angrily.

Helen heard him.

She turned toward the jury.

“My son did not become violent because Lena provoked him.”

“He did not steal because his father pressured him.”

“He did not hurt Camille because she embarrassed him.”

“He made those choices.”

“And every time we protected him from consequences, we taught him he could make them again.”

Victor stood.

“You are lying.”

The judge ordered him to sit.

He ignored the command.

“You begged me to save this family.”

Helen’s eyes filled with tears.

“I begged you to stop destroying it.”

“You are my mother.”

“Yes.”

Her voice broke.

“That is why I should have stopped you first.”

Deputies forced Victor back into his chair.

His face was red with rage.

For the first time, the jury saw the same man Lena had lived with behind closed doors.

No plate was necessary.

No recording was necessary.

Victor revealed himself.
