Chapter 13 - THE MAN BEHIND THE CAMERAS

The photographs carried small printed codes.
Daniel recognized them immediately.
Corporate surveillance numbers.
Michael Dorn had access to every security system connected to Ethan’s company.
Office cameras.
Garage entry logs.
Vehicle trackers.
Even the smart-home network at the Connecticut mansion.
Richard had never needed to guess Ethan’s movements.
Dorn had been watching him.
The FBI became involved before noon.
This was no longer only a family trust dispute.
The shell companies crossed international borders.
The stolen money moved through multiple banks.
The kidnapping plan had triggered several federal crimes.
Ethan sat with investigators for hours.
He told them everything.
Even the parts that made him look foolish.
How completely he had trusted Richard.
How little he had questioned Celeste.
How he had avoided Claire’s study because grief hurt too much.
An agent named Rebecca Shaw placed a file on the table.
“Mr. Carter, we think Richard planned to leave the country separately.”
“Where?”
“Canada first.”
“Then possibly Europe.”
“Dorn?”
“Missing.”
Ethan looked toward the room where Sophie slept.
“Can they still reach her?”
“Not if you follow our instructions.”
Ethan nodded.
He would follow every one.
Later, Daniel entered with another discovery.
He had restored part of Claire’s old cloud archive.
There was one video file.
Dated the day before her death.
Claire appeared on screen.
She looked exhausted but calm.
“If Ethan is watching this, then I ran out of time.”
Ethan’s throat tightened.
Claire continued.
“Richard believes this is about money.”
“It isn’t.”
“It’s about control.”
“He cannot accept that something belonging to the Vale family passed through a woman he considered disloyal.”
“Sophie is not money.”
“She is not a trust.”
“She is not an heir.”
“She is our daughter.”
Ethan covered his mouth.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“Ethan, if I’m gone, don’t spend your life blaming yourself.”
“You trusted someone you loved.”
“That is not the same as choosing what he became.”
Ethan bowed his head.
For six years, guilt had lived inside him without a name.
Claire had known.
The video continued.
“There is one person Richard fears more than the police.”
Ethan looked up.
Claire said a name.
“Margaret Vale.”
Daniel frowned.
“Richard’s mother?”
Samuel, standing near the door, went pale.
“No.”
“Richard told everyone she died years ago.”
Claire’s recording gave the answer.
May you like
“She’s alive.”
“And she knows exactly what Richard did to Marianne.”
