Chapter 1 - THE MESSAGE ON THE PHOTOGRAPH

Ethan stared at the faded photograph in his hands.

For six years, he had seen that picture sitting on Sophie’s nightstand.

He had never once turned it over.

Now, beneath the soft yellow light of the mansion foyer, he recognized his late wife’s handwriting immediately.

Three lines had been written in faded blue ink.

“If anything happens to me, protect Sophie from Richard.”

“Do not let him near the lake property.”

“The truth is inside the blue room.”

Ethan stopped breathing for a moment.

Richard remained halfway down the staircase.

His shirt was open at the collar.

His expression had changed from embarrassment to something far more dangerous.

Celeste stood several feet in front of him, staring at the photograph as though she had just seen a ghost.

Ethan slowly raised his eyes.

“What lake property?”

Celeste opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Richard answered first.

“Ethan, your wife was sick near the end.”

Ethan’s jaw hardened.

“Don’t talk about my wife.”

Sophie tightened both arms around her father’s neck.

Ethan could feel her trembling.

He looked at the airline ticket again.

New York to Zurich.

Departure time, 11:40 p.m.

Passenger name, Sophie Carter.

Another ticket carried Celeste’s name.

There was no ticket for Ethan.

He looked at the passports scattered across the marble floor.

Sophie’s passport was among them.

“You were taking my six-year-old daughter out of the country tonight.”

Celeste shook her head quickly.

“It wasn’t what you think.”

“Then tell me what I should think.”

Richard came down another step.

“We were trying to protect her.”

“From who?”

Neither of them answered.

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“From me?”

Celeste’s face went pale.

Sophie suddenly pulled back from her father.

“There’s something else, Daddy.”

Everyone looked at her.

Sophie pointed toward the photograph.

“Mommy told me there was a key.”

Ethan examined the old wooden frame more carefully.

The backing had separated slightly along one corner.

He slipped his thumb beneath it.

Something metallic fell into his palm.

A tiny brass key.

Richard’s expression changed instantly.

And Ethan saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

Before Ethan could speak, Richard rushed down the final stairs.

“Give me that key.”

Ethan stepped backward, placing Sophie behind him.

For the first time in twelve years of friendship, Ethan looked at Richard and understood one terrifying possibility.

His late wife had been afraid of him.

And whatever waited inside the blue room had frightened Richard enough to forget how guilty he looked.
