Chapter 3 – Learning What Love Looks Like

Family Services opened an emergency case before sunrise.

Until relatives could be located, the girls would enter temporary protective custody.

Mara explained everything gently.

Sadie listened without interrupting.

Finally she asked one question.

"Will they split us up?"

"No," Mara answered.

"We'll try not to."

Sadie looked directly into her eyes.

"Try isn't yes."

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Hours later Ethan requested a private meeting.

"I'd like to become their emergency guardian."

Three heads turned toward him.

Mara blinked.

"You met them six hours ago."

"I knew their mother."

"You understand what you're asking?"

"I do."

"No," she said kindly.

"You understand what you feel."

"Those aren't always the same thing."

For the next week Ethan remained at the hospital every day.

Not because anyone asked.

Because every time he tried leaving, he saw Claire's letter again.

Sadie never asked him to stay.

But every afternoon she silently moved one chair closer.

Emma slowly recovered.

Her fever disappeared.

Her breathing strengthened.

She smiled for the first time after nine days.

The nurses celebrated as though they'd won a championship.

Sadie simply cried into her sister's blanket.

The investigation uncovered years of hardship.

Claire had worked three jobs.

She'd hidden her illness because missing work meant losing rent.

There was no father listed for Emma.

Sadie's father had died in a construction accident years earlier.

Claire had refused charity.

She had accepted only dignity.

Until the day she could no longer choose.

Ethan visited Claire's grave alone.

Fresh flowers rested beside a simple marker.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing grand.

Just:

Claire Brooks

Beloved Mother

He knelt in silence.

"I'm late," he whispered.

The wind carried leaves across the cemetery.

"I should've come sooner."

No answer came.

Only regret.

Three months later Family Court convened.

Judge Eleanor Hayes looked over stacks of reports.

Psychological evaluations.

Financial records.

Background investigations.

Hospital testimony.

Every nurse who had cared for the girls had submitted letters.

Every one.

They all said the same thing.

Whenever Sadie woke frightened during the night...

She called for Ethan.

Whenever Emma cried...

She reached for him too.

The judge folded her glasses.

"Mr. Cole..."

He stood.

"These children don't need a savior."

"I know."

"They need someone who intends to stay after the headlines disappear."

"I know."

She watched him carefully.

"What makes you different?"

Ethan looked toward the sisters.

Then answered with complete honesty.

May you like

"Because I'm not trying to rescue them."

"I'm trying to spend the rest of my life earning their forgiveness."
