Chapter 2 – The Name He Could Never Forget

Denise hesitated only a second before nodding.

"For a minute," she said softly. "But you have to stay beside me."

Sadie climbed off the plastic chair without another word.

Ethan found himself following behind, though no one had asked him to.

Emma looked impossibly small beneath the warmed hospital blanket. Oxygen tubing rested beneath her tiny nose while monitors blinked beside the crib. The baby's cheeks were still flushed, but the frightening stillness was gone. Every few seconds, her little chest lifted.

Sadie reached through the crib rails and touched Emma's fingers.

"I'm here," she whispered.

The baby didn't wake, but her hand curled around one of Sadie's fingers.

Only then did Sadie finally allow herself to breathe.

Outside the room, Mara opened the diaper bag again.

"There was something else," she said quietly.

She held up an old white envelope.

Across the front, written in faded blue ink, were only four words.

For Ethan Cole Only.

His stomach tightened.

"I've never seen that."

"You'd better."

He carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

Ethan,

If Sadie ever finds you, then it means I couldn't protect them anymore.

Please don't blame her. She only follows instructions.

You once told me that if I ever truly needed help, all I had to do was say your name.

I'm finally asking.

—Claire

The signature struck harder than the words.

Claire Brooks.

For sixteen years Ethan had forced himself not to think about that name.

Before billion-dollar mergers...

Before magazine covers...

Before private jets...

There had been Claire.

She had worked nights at the public library while he finished graduate school.

She had believed in him when nobody else did.

She had loaned him money she couldn't afford to lose.

She had skipped meals so he could buy textbooks.

She had laughed whenever he apologized.

"You'll pay me back someday," she'd always said.

Then life had happened.

His company exploded overnight.

Investors.

Travel.

Success.

He promised himself he'd find her once everything settled.

Everything never settled.

By the time he finally searched for Claire, she'd disappeared.

No forwarding address.

No social media.

Nothing.

He eventually convinced himself she had built a better life somewhere.

Now he understood.

She hadn't disappeared.

She had simply fallen where people like him never looked.

"What happened to her?" Ethan asked.

Mara answered quietly.

"The police are confirming it now."

She paused.

"Claire Brooks died yesterday morning."

The hallway disappeared beneath Ethan's feet.

"Cause?"

"Untreated pneumonia."

He stared at her.

"No insurance."

No one spoke.

One untreated infection.

One mother.

Two daughters.

And an entire system that had quietly allowed her to vanish.

Later that night Detective Luis Moreno arrived.

"We located the motel," he explained.

"The manager says Claire collapsed yesterday. He assumed someone had taken her to the hospital."

"They didn't?"

He shook his head.

"The girls were alone nearly twenty-four hours."

Ethan looked toward Emma's room.

Sadie had spent an entire day trying to keep her baby sister alive.

She had cooled fevers with wet towels.

Measured medicine from memory.

Counted bus stops.

Carried twenty pounds of sleeping toddler through pouring rain.

All because her mother had believed Ethan Cole would help if nobody else could.

The realization hollowed him out.

He hadn't failed yesterday.

He had failed sixteen years ago.
