Chapter 1: The Woman at the Gate

Alejandro Salvatierra had spent seven months learning how to hate his wife.

He hated her empty side of the bed. He hated the closet full of dresses she had supposedly abandoned. He hated the rumors whispered in restaurants, the pitying looks from old friends, and the way his mother always touched his shoulder and said, “Some women are born ungrateful.”

But now Valeria stood barefoot in front of him, pregnant, shaking, and alive.

And every lie he had forced himself to believe began to collapse.

“I didn’t leave,” she whispered. “They locked me up.”

Alejandro moved toward her, but Valeria flinched.

That hurt more than her disappearance.

“Valeria,” he said softly, “look at me.”

Her eyes lifted. They were not the eyes of a guilty woman. They were the eyes of someone who had spent months counting the sounds outside a locked door.

“Who?” he asked.

Valeria’s gaze shifted toward the mansion.

Before she could answer, the front doors opened.

Isabel Salvatierra stepped outside in a silk robe, elegant, calm, and smiling as if she had been waiting for this moment.

“My God,” Isabel said. “She came back.”

Valeria grabbed Alejandro’s sleeve.

His mother looked at her stomach, and for the first time, her perfect face cracked.
