CHAPTER 5 — AFTER THE SILENCE

Minutes later, the mansion was filled with voices again.

But they were not hers anymore.

Security arrived.

Orders were given.

The stepmother was escorted out without resistance now—her confidence gone, her voice gone with it.

She didn’t scream.

She didn’t fight.

Because she had already lost before she was touched.

The boy stood near the staircase.

Watching.

The man approached him again, slower this time.

“You don’t have to be afraid anymore,” he said.

The boy hesitated.

“…Are you really my dad?”

A long pause.

Then the man nodded.

“Yes.”

The boy looked down at his small hands.

Then back up.

“Why didn’t you come before?”

That question didn’t get a quick answer.

The man knelt beside him.

“I didn’t know where you were.”

Another silence.

But this one was different.

Not heavy.

Not painful.

Just unfinished.

The boy finally leaned forward—slowly—and for the first time in years, let someone pull him into a steady, quiet embrace.

The chandeliers above didn’t shine any brighter.

But the room no longer felt dark.

ENDING LINE

That night, the mansion didn’t remember the slap.

It remembered what came after it.

A door opening.

May you like

A truth returning.

And a child finally being seen.
