CHAPTER 4 — THE MOMENT EVERYTHING BROKE

The stepmother stepped back.

Her heels struck the floor too loudly.

“That’s impossible,” she said, but her voice cracked. “He has no family—he was left—he was—”

The man cut her off.

“Left by people you paid.”

The silence after that sentence was absolute.

Even the air seemed to stop moving.

The boy’s hands tightened slowly.

Something inside him shifted.

Pain didn’t disappear—but it started to make sense.

The stepmother’s face twisted.

“You can’t prove anything!”

The man finally walked toward her.

One step.

Then another.

Not fast.

Just inevitable.

“You hit him,” he said quietly.

Her lips trembled.

“It was just discipline—”

He stopped in front of her.

And for the first time, she looked small.

“Say that again,” he said.

But she couldn’t.

Because she finally understood something:

There were consequences she could no longer talk her way out of.

The boy stood behind them.

May you like

Still silent.

But no longer alone.
