Chapter 6 - Isabella’s Version of the Truth

Isabella claimed Alessio had planned the warehouse fire himself.
He needed Vittorio to believe he was dead so he could negotiate with Domenico Serra without suspicion.
Together, they built a new organization using Morelli routes and Serra money.
Then Alessio changed the agreement.
He wanted Vittorio dead.
Domenico wanted him controlled.
Isabella married Vittorio to secure both options.
“You expect me to believe you were trapped between them?” Vittorio asked.
“No.”
“I expect you to believe I chose the side that kept me alive.”
Sophia looked at him.
“She sounds like Marco.”
Vittorio almost smiled.
Children noticed patterns adults disguised as complexity.
“Where is the second trigger?” he asked.
“Inside the vault.”
“If you open it incorrectly, Renzo dies.”
“What is the correct sequence?”
“Ask Alessio.”
The call ended.
Everyone looked at him.
Alessio shook his head.
“She is turning you against me.”
“She does not need help.”
“You already tried to hide the key.”
“I came here to stop her.”
“You arrived after she tried to kill me.”
“Because I needed her to believe the plan was still working.”
Vittorio stepped close.
“Did you know Renzo would be taken?”
“No.”
“Did you know Sophia was watching the driveway?”
“No.”
“Did you know Carlo was not Enzo?”
“Yes.”
“Where is Enzo?”
Alessio looked away.
That was the answer.
Vittorio grabbed his collar.
“Where is my driver?”
“Dead.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
Enzo had driven Vittorio for three years.
He brought Sophia sweets from the city.
He taught her how to recognize the sound of each engine in the garage.
Alessio admitted Enzo discovered the replacement sedan during the night.
Carlo killed him and hid his body near the coastal road.
“You allowed it,” Vittorio said.
“I could not expose myself.”
“You protected your plan.”
“I protected the chance to come back.”
Vittorio released him with disgust.
The bomb specialist called from behind Renzo.
“There is a signal moving through the wall.”
“The second trigger is inside the vault.”
Alessio approached the iron rings.
He finally explained the sequence.
The brothers had to turn both rings simultaneously.
One clockwise.
One counterclockwise.
If either moved too quickly, the circuit would activate.
Vittorio placed his hand on the second ring.
Sophia watched Alessio’s fingers.
“Sir.”

Vittorio looked at her.
“He is counting wrong.”
