Chapter 19 - Isabella Wakes

Isabella survived surgery.

The bullet had damaged her lung but missed her heart.

Luca stood beside her bed while Vittorio remained near the door.

She told their son the truth without decoration.

She admitted helping Domenico watch Vittorio.

She admitted lying about Switzerland.

She admitted kissing Carlo to protect her cover.

She admitted agreeing to the car plan because she believed Vittorio would be abducted, not killed.

Luca listened with the stillness of a child who had lived too long around adults with secrets.

“Did you love Father?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Did you love Grandfather?”

“I feared him.”

“That is not the same.”

“No.”

Luca looked toward Vittorio.

“Are you going to forgive her?”

Vittorio answered honestly.

“I do not know.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

“That is more than I deserve.”

Outside the room, Alessio waited.

He had surrendered the council chair after three captains attempted to kill one another.

He handed Vittorio Salvatore’s complete confession.

Alessio had found it inside the hospital bag Domenico’s men left when he escaped.

The final pages revealed that Salvatore knew Alessio survived the warehouse fire.

He chose not to rescue him.

He believed captivity would punish Alessio’s ambition and prevent civil war.

Their father had sacrificed one son to protect the other.

Alessio had returned believing Vittorio approved.

“Domenico showed me a letter with your signature,” he said.

“It ordered them to keep me alive but hidden.”

“The signature was forged.”

“I know that now.”

The brothers stood in silence.

Some wounds explained betrayal.

They did not erase it.

Sophia approached with Renzo.

She carried Enzo’s old driver cap.

His body had been recovered near the coastal road.

A funeral would be held the next morning.

Vittorio looked at the child who had saved him.

“What do you want?”

She considered the question carefully.

“My papa wants to leave Naples.”

Renzo lowered his eyes.

Vittorio understood.

The gardener had given enough.

“I will give you a house wherever you choose.”

Sophia shook her head.

“We do not want a house from you.”

“What do you want?”

“A promise.”

“No more children in locked rooms.”

Vittorio looked toward Luca.

Then toward Alessio.

May you like

Then toward Isabella behind the glass.

“You have it.”
