Chapter 15 - Evelyn’s Last Recording

Technicians restored the damaged cassette tape completely.

A final section had been hidden beneath static.

Evelyn spoke more softly.

“Claire, I know you will be tempted to use this inheritance to prove you are different from them.”

“Do not build your life around being the opposite of someone else.”

“Build what is useful.”

I listened alone inside the farmhouse kitchen.

She continued.

“Your mother was not always cruel.”

“She became frightened of having less than other people.”

“Your father became frightened of conflict.”

“Miles became frightened of being ordinary.”

“Fear explains the door they walked through.”

“It does not excuse what they did after entering.”

I paused the tape.

For months, I had tried to understand whether some earlier kindness made the crimes less final.

My mother had cared for me after surgery.

My father taught me to drive.

Miles once slept outside my bedroom when I was afraid of thunderstorms.

Those memories were real.

So was the fire.

People could contain tenderness and still choose terrible harm.

I did not need to erase the good to justify protecting myself from the bad.

Evelyn’s recording ended with one request.

“Keep the spring public.”

I had not known there was a spring.

A surveyor found it beyond the northern orchard.

The water fed a small creek crossing three neighboring farms.

Miles’s development plan would have diverted it into private landscaping.

I placed the spring and surrounding woodland into a permanent conservation easement.

No future owner could sell the water.

The farmhouse remained mine.

The land partly belonged to everyone downstream.

That decision would have infuriated my family.

It made me feel closer to Evelyn.
