Chapter 5 — What the Search Revealed

At exactly 8:00 the following morning, two patrol vehicles and an unmarked SUV stopped outside the Bennett residence.

Arthur opened the front door before anyone knocked.

"I've already spoken to detectives."

Detective Harris handed him a document.

"Today we're here with a court-authorized search warrant."

Arthur scanned the first page, his jaw tightening.

"You can't search my home."

Harris remained composed.

"The property owner has consented to our entry, and the warrant has been approved by a judge."

Arthur stepped aside without another word.

The forensic team moved methodically through the house.

Every room was photographed before anything was touched.

In the kitchen, investigators carefully collected the broken ceramic mug, the stained tablecloth, and the towel Claire had used to shield her burns.

A crime scene photographer paused over the breakfast table.

The wedding ring was gone.

Only a faint circle of dust remained where it had rested.

Detective Ruiz noticed something else.

The kitchen ceiling held a small, dome-shaped security camera.

She looked at Arthur.

"I thought you said you didn't have cameras inside."

Arthur's expression changed for the briefest moment.

"I... forgot about that one."

"You forgot you installed a camera over your own kitchen?"

"It hasn't worked in years."

Ruiz wrote nothing.

She simply called the digital forensics technician into the room.

Upstairs, another team searched Arthur's home office.

Inside a locked desk drawer, they found three external hard drives, a stack of unopened bank statements, and a notebook filled with handwritten account numbers.

One page caught Detective Harris's attention.

Beside several transfer amounts were two initials:

B.L.

Brooke Lawson.

The amounts matched transactions listed in Claire's forensic accounting report almost exactly.

Meanwhile, the digital technician removed the memory card from the kitchen security system.

He connected it to a recovery device.

"It looks damaged," Arthur said quickly.

"Probably empty."

The technician didn't answer.

Several minutes passed.

Then a progress bar appeared on the screen.

Recovering Deleted Files...

Arthur felt his stomach drop.

"You can recover deleted footage?"

The technician glanced at him.

"Most people are surprised by that."

Arthur looked away.

Forty-five minutes later, Detective Ruiz watched the recovered recording.

There was no audio.

None was needed.

Claire sat quietly eating breakfast.

Brooke leaned across the table, speaking animatedly.

Arthur picked up his coffee mug.

He paused.

Looked directly at Claire.

Then deliberately threw the contents across her face.

Claire screamed, stumbling backward as the mug hit the table.

Brooke didn't rush to help.

She didn't even stand.

Instead, she calmly continued buttering her toast.

The room fell silent.

Detective Harris replayed the footage once more.

There was no accident.

No sudden movement.

No spilled cup.

Only a deliberate act of violence.

He looked toward Arthur, who had gone completely pale.

"You told us it slipped."

Arthur opened his mouth but no words came.

Detective Harris closed the laptop.

"Mr. Bennett..."

He reached for a pair of handcuffs hanging from his belt.

"...at this point, I'd advise you not to say another word until you've spoken with an attorney."

Arthur stared at the metal cuffs.

For the first time since Claire walked out of the house, he understood one undeniable truth.

The evidence wasn't building against him anymore.

It was complete.

And somewhere across the city, Victoria Caldwell's phone lit up with a message from Detective Ruiz.

We found the video. It's exactly as Claire described.

Victoria smiled faintly before dialing Claire.

When Claire answered, only four words were necessary.

"We have everything now."

Claire closed her eyes.

The burn on her face still ached.

But for the first time since the coffee struck her skin, the pain was no longer the strongest feeling she carried.

Justice had finally begun.
