Chapter 6 — The Arrest

Claire was standing on the balcony of the furnished apartment Victoria had arranged when her phone rang.
She recognized the number immediately.
"Claire," Victoria said, her voice steady. "They've arrested Arthur."
Claire closed her eyes.
She had imagined this moment countless times over the years, but now that it had arrived, she felt neither triumph nor relief.
Only quiet.
"When?"
"About ten minutes ago. He's being booked on charges of aggravated assault. The district attorney will decide whether to add additional charges after reviewing the financial evidence."
Claire thanked her and ended the call.
The city stretched below her, busy as always, completely unaware that the chapter defining the last eight years of her life had finally come to an end.
A new one was just beginning.
Arthur sat in a holding cell, staring at the concrete floor.
His expensive watch had been taken.
His belt and shoelaces were locked in a plastic property bag.
The silence was unbearable.
A corrections officer approached.
"Your attorney is here."
Minutes later, criminal defense lawyer Michael Turner entered the interview room carrying a thick folder.
"I've reviewed the arrest report."
Arthur leaned forward.
"It was one mistake."
Michael didn't answer.
Instead, he opened his laptop.
"I need you to watch something."
He pressed play.
The recovered kitchen footage filled the screen.
Arthur watched himself lift the mug.
Pause.
Look directly at Claire.
Then throw the coffee.
When the video ended, Michael closed the computer.
"Do you still want to tell me it was an accident?"
Arthur buried his face in his hands.
"I was angry."
"Anger isn't a legal defense."
"I didn't think she'd leave."
Michael sighed.
"That's becoming obvious."
Across town, Brooke received a phone call from Detective Ruiz.
"We'd like you to come in for another interview."
Brooke's heart raced.
"Am I under arrest?"
"Not at this time."
The answer brought little comfort.
The interview room felt colder than Brooke expected.
Ruiz placed two statements on the table.
"These are yours."
Brooke nodded.
"And this..."
Ruiz slid a tablet across the table.
"...is the kitchen security footage."
Brooke watched in silence.
She saw herself sitting calmly while Claire screamed.
She saw herself continue eating.
She saw Arthur deliberately throw the coffee.
When the video ended, tears formed in her eyes.
"I..."
Ruiz waited.
"I didn't think he'd actually do it."
"You told us it was an accident."
Brooke looked down.
"I lied."
"Why?"
"Because he's my brother."
Ruiz leaned forward.
"And now?"
Brooke's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"I'll tell you everything."
Later that evening, Victoria spread several folders across the conference table.
Claire looked at the newest addition.
"Brooke changed her statement?"
Victoria nodded.
"Completely."
"What does that mean?"
"It means Arthur has lost his only eyewitness."
Victoria opened another folder—the forensic accounting report.
"And tomorrow, we begin the financial case."
Claire looked at the pages documenting months of hidden transfers, forged authorizations, and fabricated invoices.
For years, Arthur believed the coffee he threw had been his biggest mistake.
He was wrong.

The assault had simply exposed a far larger crime—one that had been quietly unfolding for months, hidden beneath fake receipts, secret accounts, and stolen trust.
Tomorrow, every dollar would finally have to be explained.
