Chapter 2: The Fall of the Cross Empire

By sunrise, every business newspaper carried the same headline.
CROSS FAMILY DEBT ACQUIRED BY LANGFORD HEIRESS DURING WEDDING CEREMONY.
Videos from the wedding flooded every social media platform.
Nathaniel became the symbol of arrogance.
Sophia became the woman everyone admired.
Inside Cross Group headquarters, panic spread.
Banks demanded updated financial reports.
Investors withdrew millions.
Suppliers canceled contracts.
Employees whispered that bankruptcy was only days away.
Nathaniel entered his father's office.
Richard looked ten years older overnight.
"You have to fix this."
Nathaniel swallowed.
"I'll talk to Sophia."
"You won't talk."
Richard slammed both hands onto the desk.
"You'll beg."
Hours later, Nathaniel stood outside Sophia's office.
The receptionist recognized him immediately.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Cross."
"Miss Langford has a full schedule."
"I only need five minutes."
She smiled politely.
"She said you would."
Nathaniel lowered his head.
"I deserve that."
The receptionist disappeared into the office.
Several minutes later she returned.
"Miss Langford will see you."
Nathaniel entered slowly.
Sophia stood beside the window overlooking the city.
She didn't turn around.
"I never imagined we'd meet like this."
Nathaniel spoke softly.
"I'm sorry."
She remained silent.
"I loved you."
"No."
She finally faced him.
"You loved the version of me you thought needed you."
Nathaniel couldn't answer.
"You believed money made you powerful."
She walked toward him.
"But power isn't having people beneath you."
"It's having the chance to destroy someone...
and choosing not to."
Nathaniel looked up with hope.
Sophia placed a folder on the table.
"I won't call the debt today."
His eyes widened.
"But the wedding is over."
"So is us."
She walked to the door and opened it.
"I've forgiven you."
Her voice remained calm.
"I simply won't return to you."
May you like
Nathaniel understood.
Forgiveness and reconciliation were never the same thing.
