Chapter 14 - THE VERDICT AT ASHCROFT

The jury deliberated for sixteen hours.

Elena waited at Ashcroft Manor with Isabel.

The western wing remained damaged from the explosion.

Tarps covered the library roof.

Workers had saved the carved lion.

It stood inside the ballroom near the television that exposed Victoria.

Elena had refused to remove the screen.

It was no longer evidence.

It was a reminder.

The truth had entered the room through technology because people had failed to speak.

Aaron arrived before sunset.

“The verdict is in.”

The courtroom filled within an hour.

Victoria entered wearing a navy suit and pearls.

She looked as if she were attending a board meeting.

Elena sat beside Isabel.

Peter and his wife sat behind them.

The clerk read the charges.

Guilty of murdering Jonathan Langley.

Guilty of murdering Michael Mercer.

Guilty of attempting to murder Isabel Mercer.

Guilty of kidnapping.

Guilty of attempted murder at Mercer Textiles.

Guilty of fraud.

Guilty of conspiracy.

Guilty of evidence destruction.

Guilty of framing Elena Langley.

Each verdict removed another layer of Victoria’s control.

She remained still until the clerk read the final charge.

Guilty of the unlawful seizure of Mercer Textiles.

Victoria laughed.

The judge looked at her.

“Do you find the verdict amusing?”

“The company no longer exists.”

Isabel answered from the gallery.

“The name does.”

Victoria turned.

Isabel stood.

So did Elena.

The Mercer name had survived prison.

Fake death certificates.

Stolen patents.

Burned records.

Three murders.

It existed because the people carrying it had refused to disappear.

At sentencing, Victoria made no apology.

She described herself as the only person strong enough to preserve the Langley empire.

The judge disagreed.

“You did not preserve an empire.”

“You preserved access to theft.”

Victoria received three consecutive life sentences.

Her assets were seized.

Ashcroft Manor remained Elena’s property because Jonathan transferred it before his death.

The Langley family trust was dissolved.

Restitution payments went to former Mercer shareholders and employees.

As officers led Victoria away, she looked at Elena.

“You will destroy everything I built.”

Elena shook her head.

“You built nothing.”

“You only renamed what you stole.”

Victoria struggled against the officers.

For one final moment, the polite society mask disappeared.

She cursed Elena.

She cursed Isabel.

She cursed Jonathan.

The pearls around her neck snapped.

White beads scattered across the courtroom floor.

No one bent to collect them.

Outside, reporters surrounded Elena.

They asked what she would do with Langley Industries.

She answered with the decision she had already made.

“The company will be renamed Mercer-Langley Group.”

One reporter frowned.

“Why keep the Langley name?”

Elena looked toward the courthouse doors.

May you like

“Because Jonathan chose to repair what his family broke.”

“He should not be erased with the people who refused.”
