Chapter 1 - The Smile at the Gates

Victoria told me my traumatized son was an embarrassment to everyone.

Brooke rolled her eyes from the velvet sofa and said her daughter deserved to live in a peaceful home.

My husband, Nathan, stood beside the fireplace with a glass of bourbon in his hand and said absolutely nothing.

That silence told me more than any confession ever could.

My eight-year-old son, Ethan, was upstairs in his bedroom.

He had been there since breakfast.

He had barely spoken for three weeks.

Ever since the accident, loud noises made him freeze.

Closed doors made him panic.

And whenever someone touched him unexpectedly, his entire body trembled before he could stop it.

The therapist had warned us that recovery would take patience.

Victoria apparently believed patience meant hiding him where nobody had to see him.

“This family has already sacrificed enough,” she said.

I looked at her.

Victoria Caldwell sat beneath the crystal chandelier I had paid to restore.

She was wearing a cream designer suit purchased with an account belonging to a company I controlled.

Behind her were French windows overlooking twelve acres of land that had belonged to my grandfather.

Brooke sat beside her with her twelve-year-old daughter, Olivia.

Olivia stared at the floor.

She looked more uncomfortable than spoiled.

Brooke did not.

“Nathan,” I said quietly.

My husband finally looked at me.

“What?”

“Do you agree with them?”

His jaw tightened.

Victoria interrupted.

“Claire, don't start another emotional performance.”

I kept looking at Nathan.

“I'm asking my husband.”

Nathan sighed as though I were exhausting him.

“I think Ethan needs professional help.”

“He has professional help.”

“He needs more than we're equipped to handle.”

The words landed harder than Victoria's insult.

I nodded once.

Then I smiled.

Nathan frowned.

“Why are you smiling?”

Headlights appeared beyond the front windows.

A black sedan rolled toward the estate gates.

Victoria glanced outside.

“Who is that?”

I pulled my phone from my pocket.

I pressed a button.

The gates opened.

Rebecca Sloan stepped from the sedan thirty seconds later.

Rebecca was one of the most feared corporate attorneys in Manhattan.

She had represented my father's company for seventeen years.

Now she represented me.

She walked toward the front door carrying two thick document cases.

Nathan's face changed when he recognized her.

“Claire.”

I said nothing.

Rebecca entered after the house manager let her in.

She placed the first folder on the marble table.

Then the second.

Nathan stared at them.

“What is this?”

Rebecca looked directly at him.

“Your wife has filed for divorce.”

Victoria shot to her feet.

Brooke stopped smiling.

Nathan laughed once.

It sounded nervous.

“You're joking.”

Rebecca opened the second folder.

“And pursuant to Section Eleven of the Caldwell-Rhodes Holdings operating agreement, Claire is exercising her right as controlling shareholder to dissolve the residential asset partnership.”

Nathan's face drained of color.

Victoria whispered, “What does that mean?”

I answered her.

“It means this house goes on the market.”

Nobody spoke.

I continued.

“The beach house goes too.”

Brooke's mouth opened.

“So does the Aspen property.”

Nathan put down his glass.

“Claire, stop.”

“The cars leased through the company are being returned.”

Victoria stared at me.

“You can't do that.”

“I already did.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“This is my home.”

I looked toward the staircase leading to Ethan's room.

“No.”

My voice stayed calm.

“This was supposed to be his home too.”

Then Rebecca slid one final envelope across the table.

Nathan did not touch it.

“What is that?”

Rebecca's expression hardened.

“Evidence preservation notice.”

For the first time that night, Nathan looked frightened.

I watched him stare at the envelope.

Then he looked at Victoria.

And Victoria looked at Brooke.

That was when I realized something I had not expected.

May you like

They weren't only afraid of losing the estate.

They were afraid of what I might discover inside it.
