Chapter 14 - THE BABY SHOWER WITHOUT A HUSBAND

Rachel threw me a baby shower.
I told her not to.
She ignored me.
There were twenty people.
Not sixty.
Not a hundred.
No speeches about perfect families.
Just food.
Books.
Tiny socks.
Nurses I used to work with.
Tyler came with his girlfriend.
Leonard and his wife brought a children’s history book.
Mark arrived last.
He looked terrified.
“You invited a firefighter to a room full of nurses.”
Rachel said.
“Brave.”
He laughed.
Then handed me a small box.
Inside was not jewelry.
It was the torn page from my elevator notebook.
Professionally preserved between two pieces of clear acrylic.
The final readable line.
Baby movement reduced.
Mark looked embarrassed.
“I thought maybe it was strange.”
“It is.”
“Oh.”
“But I love it.”
Because the page was not about fear.
It was proof.
Even when my body was failing, I was paying attention.
Trying.
Protecting.
After the shower, Mark stayed behind.
“I got promoted to permanent assignment.”
“That fast?”
“Not promoted exactly.”
“Just no longer probationary.”
“Congratulations.”
He smiled.
Then became serious.
“I almost didn’t report Alex.”
“Why?”
“He was a lieutenant.”
“People respected him.”
“I thought maybe I misunderstood.”
“What changed?”
He looked at me.
“The ring.”
I frowned.
“When you handed it to me, I realized you were his wife.”
“And then I realized he knew you were there.”
“If I stayed quiet after that, I would be helping him turn what happened into something else.”
I looked at the preserved notebook page.
“So the ring exposed him.”
Mark shook his head.
“No.”
“His choice exposed him.”
“The ring just made me ask why.”
That distinction mattered.
