CHAPTER 1 — THE BABY IN THE BLUE BLANKET

The first sound Emily heard behind the hospital was not the rain.
It was a cry.
Small.
Broken.
Alive.
Her knees nearly gave out.
Quincy stood beside her in the darkness, his little hand wrapped around two of her fingers as if he were the one holding her upright.
“There,” he whispered.
Near the medical waste containers, beneath a flickering security light, a blue hospital blanket moved.
Emily staggered forward.
Every step tore through her body. She had given birth less than an hour ago. Her legs shook. Her blood felt cold. Her mind kept repeating the lie they had told her.
Your daughter didn’t make it.
But the blanket moved again.
Emily dropped to her knees on the wet pavement and pulled it open.
A tiny face appeared.
Red.
Wrinkled.
Furious.
Breathing.
Her daughter.
Emily made a sound that was half sob, half prayer. She lifted the baby against her chest, shielding her from the rain with her hospital gown.
“My baby,” she whispered. “My sweet girl.”
Quincy looked over his shoulder toward the back door.
“They’re coming.”
Emily turned.
Through the rain-streaked glass, she saw Nathan.
Her husband.
And behind him, Margaret, still clutching that worn leather Bible like a weapon.
Nathan’s face was no longer empty.
It was afraid.
“Emily!” he shouted from the doorway. “Put her down!”
That was when Emily understood.
This had not been a mistake.
This had been planned.
She tightened her arms around the newborn and looked at Quincy.
“Run.”
May you like
The boy nodded.
And together, barefoot, bleeding, and terrified, Emily ran into the storm with the daughter they had tried to erase.
