Chapter 3: Margaret Wakes

Margaret Whitmore woke properly two days later.
Her wrist was in a cast. Her hip was braced. Her pride was in worse condition than both.
Nathaniel sat beside her bed with the video paused on his tablet.
“I know,” he said.
Margaret stared at the screen.
For the first time in Nathaniel’s life, his mother looked old.
Not weak.
Never weak.
Just tired.
“She asked me to change the will,” Margaret said.
Nathaniel went still.
“When?”
“The morning before it happened.”
Vivien had come to Margaret’s private sitting room with tea, wearing pearls and humility. She had spoken about love, legacy, family unity. Then she had suggested Margaret remove the charitable trust from the estate plan and place more assets under Nathaniel’s marital control once the wedding happened.
Margaret had laughed in her face.
“She did not like that,” Margaret said dryly.
Nathaniel’s jaw tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you were in love,” Margaret said. “And men in love are deaf.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Margaret looked at him.
“The child saw?”
“Yes.”
“Protect her.”
“I will.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“And protect her mother. Vivien will not go quietly.”
She was right.
By evening, Vivien had already made her move.
Photos appeared online: Vivien leaving the Whitmore estate in tears, surrounded by reporters. A headline followed within hours.
BILLIONAIRE’S FIANCÉE ACCUSED AFTER TRAGIC FAMILY ACCIDENT
Then came the interviews.
Vivien did not openly accuse Nathaniel. She was too clever for that.
She only looked heartbroken and said she hoped “grief had not made him vulnerable to manipulation by household staff.”
Rosa saw the clip on her phone and nearly vomited.
By midnight, strangers were calling her a liar.
By morning, someone had posted her full name online.
Nathaniel arrived at her door with two security guards behind him.
“Pack what you need,” he said. “You and Lily are leaving this house tonight.”
Rosa’s eyes filled with panic.

“Sir, please, I didn’t—”
“You’re not fired,” Nathaniel said. “You’re protected.”
