Chapter 15 - The Woman Behind the Door

We did not storm the estate.

The old Daniel would have.

The father Renata needed could not.

Rafael provided evidence showing his company had legally retained emergency access rights to portions of the underground structure because of unresolved structural work.

His attorney contacted state authorities.

Nathan supplied the recording.

Detective Warren supplied the altered crash report.

The retired paramedic agreed to testify.

For the first time, we had enough to force legitimate action.

But somebody leaked the plan.

By the time investigators reached Sebastian’s estate, the underground wing was burning.

Flames poured through a rear ventilation shaft.

Sebastian Varela stood on the lawn in a robe, pretending to be shocked.

He was seventy-six now.

White hair.

Thin frame.

A wealthy grandfather surrounded by attorneys.

He looked at me across the police line.

And smiled.

That smile brought back nineteen years in a single second.

I walked toward him.

An officer stopped me.

Sebastian raised his voice.

“Daniel.”

Cameras turned.

“You’ve caused enough trouble.”

I said nothing.

“You should go back to your daughter.”

That was when I knew.

He had something left to lose.

Firefighters entered the underground wing.

Thirty minutes passed.

Then forty.

At fifty-three minutes, two firefighters emerged carrying someone.

A woman.

Older.

Unconscious.

Alive.

My legs stopped working.

Her hair was almost entirely silver.

Her face had changed.

But I knew the shape of those hands.

I knew the small scar above her right eyebrow.

I knew her.

“Elena.”

The name escaped me as a whisper.

Mateo caught my shoulder.

The stretcher passed through the gate.

Her eyes remained closed.

Sebastian stopped smiling.

I turned toward him.

For nineteen years, I had imagined a thousand ways of punishing the man responsible for my wife’s death.

None of them prepared me for discovering he had denied me her life instead.

“She was alive.”

Sebastian’s attorney stepped forward.

“My client has no idea who that woman is.”

I looked at him.

“You kept my wife imprisoned.”

“That is an outrageous accusation.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

Sebastian’s face tightened.

Police moved toward him.

But before they reached him, an SUV accelerated through the estate’s side gate.

It stopped beside Sebastian.

Two men jumped out.

Everything happened quickly.

Sebastian was pulled inside.

The vehicle disappeared through a service road before police could block it.

Victor cursed.

Mateo looked toward me.

I did not chase.

I followed the ambulance.

At the hospital, doctors worked on Elena for hours.

Renata was brought down in a wheelchair.

When I told her who had been found, she covered her mouth and began crying.

We waited together.

Near midnight, the doctor finally approached.

“She’s alive.”

My daughter squeezed my hand.

“Can we see her?”

“Briefly.”

We entered.

Elena looked impossibly small beneath the blankets.

Renata stood beside me.

Her mother’s eyes slowly opened.

Confusion passed across them.

Then she saw me.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

I wondered whether nineteen years had erased me.

Then her lips moved.

“Daniel?”

I broke.

I took her hand.

“I’m here.”

She started crying.

“So is Renata.”

Her eyes moved toward our daughter.

Elena stared at the nineteen-year-old woman she had last seen as an infant.

May you like

Then she whispered something that changed everything again.

“Sebastian didn’t order the crash.”
