Chapter 3: Rachel’s Last Secret

Yvette recognized the key immediately.

“The chapel safe,” she whispered.

Estelle’s face changed.

For the first time that night, the matriarch looked afraid.

Christopher looked from the key to his mother.

“What is in the chapel safe?”

Estelle lifted her chin.

“Nothing that belongs to you.”

“That means everything.”

Christopher took Emma’s hand and walked past his mother.

No one stopped him.

The old family chapel sat behind the mansion, half-covered in ivy, used only for funerals and portraits. Christopher had not been inside since Rachel’s memorial service.

The air smelled of dust, wax, and secrets.

Behind the altar, Yvette pressed a hidden panel. A small steel safe appeared in the wall.

Emma handed Christopher the key.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a leather journal, a sealed letter, and a flash drive wrapped in Rachel’s blue scarf.

Christopher opened the letter first.

His name was written across the top.

Chris,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect our daughter alone.

Your mother knows Emma is yours. She knew before you did. She forged the DNA report. She paid Dr. Voss to tell you I lied.

I was never leaving you.

I was running from them.

Christopher could not see the page for a moment.

Yvette covered her mouth.

Emma looked up at him, confused and frightened.

He forced himself to continue.

The land under the Pierce estate belongs to Emma through my grandmother’s trust. Estelle wanted me to sign it away. I refused.

If something happens to me, find Attorney Samuel Crane.

Do not trust your mother.

Do not hide our daughter.

Love her loudly.

Rachel.

Christopher folded over like the words had punched through his ribs.

All these years, he had buried his love under shame his mother had created.

Then Yvette plugged the flash drive into her tablet.

A video appeared.

Rachel sat in a car at night, bruised, crying, holding newborn Emma against her chest.

“If I disappear,” Rachel said on the screen, “Estelle Pierce did it.”

The chapel door creaked behind them.

Estelle stood there with two private guards.

Her face was calm again.

“You should have left dead women buried,” she said.

The guards stepped forward.

Christopher moved Emma behind him.

But before they could touch him, red and blue lights flashed through the chapel windows.

Police cars rolled through the estate gates.

Juliette had made one final choice.

She had called 911.

And she had told them everything.
