CHAPTER 3 — “The Second Anklet Appears”

That night, Mr. Hale returned alone to the dining hall.
The piano was untouched.
The chandelier flickered slightly, as if the house itself was unstable.
He placed a small black case on the table.
Inside—
Another silver anklet.
Identical.
Perfectly preserved.
Chloe’s eyes widened.
“I thought there was only one…”
Mr. Hale nodded slowly.
“There was never supposed to be a separation.”
His voice lowered.
“Your mother didn’t lose a child, Chloe.”
He paused.
“She lost you.”
Footsteps echoed sharply.
Victoria entered.
And for the first time—
she looked broken.
“No,” she whispered. “That’s not true.”
But her voice didn’t convince anyone.
Not even herself.
Mr. Hale turned to her.
“You changed their names.”
“You erased the records.”
“You separated them before anyone could stop you.”
May you like
Victoria’s lips trembled.
Because denial only works until the truth starts speaking louder.
