Chapter 4: Breaking Point

“Run!”

Elena shoved Lily toward the kitchen.

“Go!”

The peaceful silence exploded.

David charged forward.

The heavy drill remained clenched in his hand.

Elena threw herself into him, scratching at his face.

Her nails tore across his cheek.

He roared.

His forearm slammed into her jaw.

Pain exploded through her face.

She crashed onto the hardwood floor.

Blood filled her mouth.

For one terrifying second, everything blurred.

Then she saw him.

David was walking toward the kitchen.

Toward Lily.

No.

Adrenaline erased the pain.

Elena forced herself upright.

She spotted the glass coffee pot sitting on the counter.

Without thinking, she grabbed it.

As David seized Lily by the sleeve...

Elena swung.

The coffee pot shattered across the back of his head.

Glass.

Coffee.

Blood.

Everything exploded together.

David stumbled forward.

One hand flew to the back of his head.

When he turned around, his eyes looked wild.

“You crazy bitch.”

His voice was low.

Dangerously calm.

He stepped toward her.

Elena didn’t move.

She tightened her grip around the jagged piece of broken glass still in her hand.

“Touch her again,” she said, “and I swear to God... I’ll kill you.”

For the first time...

David hesitated.
