Chapter 1: Lock the Doors
The banquet hall did not move.
Not one guest reached for a glass.
Not one waiter stepped forward.
Even the orchestra had stopped playing, leaving behind only the soft, broken cries of Maya’s baby.
Colonel Marcus Vance stood beneath the chandeliers with the old silver medal in his hand, his face carved with disbelief.
“Lock the doors,” he repeated.
The security guards obeyed without hesitation.
Victoria Sterling’s perfect smile cracked.
“This is absurd,” she said, but her voice had lost its power. “Colonel, you are embarrassing yourself.”
Marcus turned slowly.
“No,” he said. “You already did that.”
A whisper moved through the hall.
Maya held her baby tighter.
She did not understand why everyone was suddenly looking at her differently. Minutes ago, she had been a poor orphan unworthy of the Sterling name. Now the most respected man in the room was staring at her as if she were a ghost returned from the dead.
Marcus took one step toward her.
“Maya,” he said carefully, “where did you get this medal?”
Her lips trembled.
“It was found with me,” she whispered. “The police said I had it when they found me near the highway.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
For a moment, the old soldier looked like a man standing at a grave.
Then he opened them again.
“This medal belonged to General Elias Vance.”
The room changed.
The name carried weight.
Even Victoria knew it.
General Elias Vance had been a national hero. A decorated commander. A man whose family vanished after a private plane crash twenty-four years ago.
Marcus looked at Maya.
“And General Vance had only one granddaughter.”
Maya stopped breathing.
Victoria went pale.
Marcus lifted the medal.
“She disappeared the same night her parents died.”
The guests erupted into whispers.
Maya shook her head slowly.
“No. That’s impossible.”
Marcus’s voice softened.
“Her name was Amelia Rose Vance.”
The baby whimpered against Maya’s chest.
