Chapter 1: The Woman on the Marble Floor

The Grand Ballroom at Obsidian Estate shimmered beneath towering crystal chandeliers.
Champagne flowed.
A string quartet played softly.
The city's wealthiest families laughed over million-dollar deals as though money were nothing more than another cocktail.
Victoria Sterling loved nights like this.
This was where people mattered.
Or didn't.
She adjusted the diamond necklace resting against her collarbone and admired her reflection in a nearby mirror. Every inch of her custom silver gown had been designed to remind the room exactly where she belonged.
At the top.
Then someone bumped into her.
A waiter lost his balance.
Red wine splashed across the marble floor, missing Victoria's dress by inches.
The ballroom went quiet.
Victoria slowly looked down.
Then at the woman standing beside the fallen tray.
The woman wore an oversized gray coat that looked at least a decade old. Her hair was tied back without much care, and she looked exhausted—as though she'd been awake for days.
Without saying a word, the woman knelt to clean the spill.
Victoria's lips curled.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me."
Her voice sliced through the music.
"You can't even carry a tray without making a scene?"
The woman quietly reached into her pocket and unfolded a white handkerchief.
"I'm sorry."
It was barely above a whisper.
"I said look at me."
The woman slowly lifted her eyes.
Victoria stepped closer.
"If you're going to embarrass yourself, at least finish the job."
She extended one gold stiletto toward the woman.
"My shoe."
Several guests laughed.
Someone discreetly raised a phone.
Another guest smiled into a champagne glass.
The woman hesitated.
Only for a second.
Then she lowered her head and gently wiped the polished leather.
No anger.
No argument.
Only silent tears sliding down her cheeks.

She already knew who Victoria Sterling was.
And she knew exactly how this night was going to end.
