Chapter 2 — Old Secrets Behind New Money

Victoria Ashford had spent thirty-five years convincing the city she was untouchable.

She believed it.

Most people did.

The Ashford family controlled hospitals, museums, banks, universities, and enough political donations to influence elections.

People smiled when Victoria entered a room.

People apologized when she frowned.

People disappeared from business circles when she decided they should.

Tonight was supposed to celebrate another year of charitable giving.

Instead...

A little girl refused to cry quietly.

And her mother refused to kneel.

Victoria turned toward the chairman of the foundation.

"Robert."

The elderly man looked uncomfortable.

"Remove them."

Robert didn't move.

Victoria frowned.

"I gave you an order."

"I heard you."

"Then why are they still standing here?"

Robert slowly adjusted his glasses.

"Because..."

He hesitated.

"...I don't believe I can."

A ripple spread through the crowd.

Victoria stared.

"What nonsense are you talking about?"

Robert looked toward Emily.

His expression softened.

"Perhaps..."

he said carefully,

"...there are introductions that should have happened years ago."

Victoria laughed.

"This woman?"

Robert nodded.

"Emily Carter."

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"Never heard of her."

"No."

Robert replied quietly.

"You wouldn't have."

"She never wanted publicity."

Emily sighed.

"I asked you not to do this tonight."

Robert answered softly,

"I know."

"But some truths eventually choose their own moment."

Guests whispered.

Phones quietly began recording.

Victoria's confidence cracked for the first time.

"What truth?"

Robert faced the audience.

"Twenty-two years ago..."

"The Ashford Foundation was bankrupt."

Murmurs erupted.

"Every major donor withdrew."

"The board resigned."

"The banks refused additional loans."

Victoria interrupted sharply.

"My father rebuilt it."

Robert looked directly at her.

"No."

"He couldn't."

"He had already exhausted every option."

The ballroom became silent again.

Robert continued.

"A young attorney..."

"...working completely behind the scenes..."

"...negotiated every agreement."

"...saved every scholarship."

"...preserved every hospital."

"...and refused public recognition."

Victoria stared at Emily.

"No..."

Robert nodded.

May you like

"That attorney..."

"...was Emily Carter."
