CHAPTER 2 — The House That Lied

Emma crawled into the tunnel as the piano room vanished behind her.

Dust filled her lungs. The passage was narrow, lit by faint emergency strips that flickered like dying stars.

Above her, voices echoed through the walls.

“She’s not in the music room!”

“Check the servant corridors!”

Then Claire’s voice—sharp, controlled.

“She won’t leave the house. She was raised to fear the outside.”

Emma stopped crawling.

Raised?

Her father had always told her she was “precious,” that she was protected because of danger outside. But Claire’s words sounded… different.

The tunnel opened into a small underground control room.

Monitors lined the wall.

Every room of the mansion was visible.

And every screen showed movement.

Her father spoke through the phone again. “You’re in the old security hub. Good.”

“You built this under the house?” Emma asked.

“I didn’t,” he said. “My father did. I only restored it.”

Another pause.

Then he added, quieter, “Emma… Claire was never supposed to have access to this system.”

On one screen, Claire suddenly looked directly into a camera.

Smiling.

As if she knew Emma was watching.

“She’s tracking me,” Emma whispered.

“Yes,” her father said. “Because she helped design the system too.”

Emma’s stomach dropped.

“Then why is she doing this?”

Her father’s voice hardened for the first time.

“Because she believes you are not my daughter… but a replacement for someone she lost.”

A loud alarm suddenly echoed through the mansion.

Claire had triggered lockdown.

Steel doors slammed shut above.

And the system voice echoed through the tunnels:

“LOCKDOWN MODE: CHILD MUST BE RETRIEVED.”

Emma backed away from the screen.

“She’s locking me in?”

“No,” her father said. “She’s locking everyone else out.”

A beat.

Then:

“Emma… go to the red door. The truth is behind it.”
