Chapter 1: The First Word

The ballroom sparkled beneath crystal chandeliers.

Champagne glasses clinked.

A string quartet played softly in the corner.

Guests laughed and congratulated billionaire real estate developer Nathan Caldwell on his engagement to the elegant and sophisticated Vanessa Hart.

Everything looked perfect.

Exactly the way Vanessa had planned it.

Only one thing threatened that perfect picture.

Seven-year-old Emma Caldwell.

Nathan's daughter.

The child who had not spoken a single word since her mother's death three years earlier.

Doctors called it trauma-induced mutism.

Psychologists said she might never fully recover.

Nathan never stopped hoping.

Yet as the engagement party continued, Emma stood alone near the staircase, clutching a stuffed rabbit and watching the crowd.

Then suddenly she froze.

Her eyes locked on someone across the room.

A housemaid carrying a tray of drinks.

The woman wore a simple black uniform.

Her name tag read:

Clara Bennett

Nobody paid much attention to her.

Nobody except Emma.

The little girl's eyes widened.

The tray nearly slipped from Clara's hands when she noticed the child staring at her.

Something felt strange.

Familiar.

Impossible.

Emma dropped her rabbit.

Then ran.

Guests turned as she raced through the ballroom.

Nathan stood abruptly.

"Emma?"

The little girl ignored him.

She ran straight toward the maid.

Straight into Clara's arms.

And then—

For the first time in three years—

Emma spoke.

Clearly.

Loudly.

Without hesitation.

"Mama."

The entire ballroom fell silent.

The tray crashed to the floor.

Glass shattered.

Nathan's face turned white.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

And Clara looked like she had seen a ghost.

Because Emma wasn't confused.

Not even a little.

The child wrapped both arms around her waist and began crying.

"Mama... Mama..."

Over and over.

The word she had refused to say to anyone else.

May you like

The word she had not spoken since the day her mother supposedly died.

And suddenly, every secret in the room began to crack.
