CHAPTER 15 — THE SON ON THE WITNESS STAND

Daniel took the oath and sat before the court.

Patricia watched him without blinking.

The prosecutor asked about the night Olivia collapsed.

Daniel described the smoke.

The screaming baby.

His wife lying on the floor.

His mother eating dinner.

He described the missing medication, the false CPS report and the belongings packed into garbage bags.

He described growing up afraid to disappoint Patricia.

Then Patricia’s attorney stood.

“Mr. Carter, your mother raised you without meaningful support from your father, correct?”

“Yes.”

“She worked hard?”

“Yes.”

“She attended your school events?”

“Yes.”

“She cared for you when you were sick?”

“Yes.”

“She loved you?”

Daniel paused.

Patricia leaned forward.

The courtroom waited.

“In her way,” he said.

The attorney moved closer.

“Isn’t it true your wife gave you an ultimatum?”

“No.”

“She consulted a divorce attorney.”

“Because I repeatedly failed to protect her.”

“Did Olivia ask you to remove your mother from your life?”

“No.”

“Did she benefit financially from your lawsuit against Patricia?”

“No.”

“Do you hate your mother?”

Daniel looked directly at Patricia.

“No.”

For the first time, Patricia seemed uncertain.

“I spent most of my life trying not to hate her,” Daniel continued. “But hate is not the opposite of what she wanted from me.”

The attorney frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“My mother wanted control. Fighting her every day would still make my life about her. I don’t hate her. I am finished with her.”

Patricia’s expression collapsed.

She stood suddenly.

“You don’t mean that.”

The judge ordered her to sit.

Patricia ignored him.

“Daniel, look at me.”

He did.

“You are angry,” she said. “But you are still my son.”

“Yes.”

“You can’t erase me.”

“No.”

“Then tell them this family belongs together.”

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“My family is together.”

Patricia looked toward Olivia.

“She is not your family. I am.”

“She is my wife. Sophie is my daughter. They are the family I chose and the family I will protect.”

“I gave birth to you!”

“And Olivia nearly died after giving birth because you wanted to prove she belonged beneath you.”

Patricia’s face turned red.

“She took you from me!”

“No,” Daniel said. “You lost me when you decided loving you required hurting everyone else.”

The judge ordered deputies to restrain Patricia.

She screamed as they led her from the courtroom.

“You’ll come back!”

Daniel did not answer.

The trial continued without her in the room.

The jury deliberated for seven hours.

Patricia was found guilty on multiple charges.

When the verdict was read, Daniel felt no victory.

Only exhaustion.

At sentencing, Patricia received incarceration followed by supervised release, mandatory counseling, restitution and a renewed no-contact order.

Before she was taken away, she requested one final opportunity to address Daniel.

The judge allowed it.

Patricia turned toward her son.

“One day Sophie will choose someone else over you,” she said. “Then you’ll understand.”

May you like

Daniel looked at his mother.

“No,” he replied. “I’ll be proud that she knows how to choose for herself.”
