CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SMILE

The recording lasted eleven seconds.

It was enough.

Patricia slipped the bottles beneath her cardigan and unplugged the camera before leaving the room.

Daniel watched it six times.

Each viewing made him feel colder.

“She knew Olivia needed those,” he whispered.

Michael stood beside him.

“Yes.”

“She watched her suffer.”

“Yes.”

Daniel turned away from the screen.

Growing up, he had believed his mother’s cruelty was accidental.

She spoke harshly because she was stressed.

She invaded privacy because she cared.

She controlled people because she feared losing them.

But the woman in the video had moved with purpose.

She had checked the hallway.

She had hidden the medication.

She had disabled the camera.

That was not concern.

It was calculation.

Rebecca sent the recording and prescription bottles to the police. She also amended the protective-order petition.

At 9:40 p.m., Patricia began calling from unknown numbers.

Daniel blocked each one.

Then a voicemail appeared.

“Daniel, I know you’re frightened,” Patricia said in a soft, almost tender voice. “Olivia is unstable. She has been for months. I removed those pills because she was taking too many.”

Daniel replayed the message for Rebecca.

“Do not answer,” she said. “She just admitted removing them.”

The next voicemail was less controlled.

“You’re twisting everything. I protected that baby when Olivia could barely protect herself.”

A third voicemail arrived.

“When Sophie grows up, she’ll learn what you did to her grandmother.”

Rebecca saved them all.

The following morning, Daniel brought Olivia and Sophie home.

Olivia stood in the hallway for a long time.

“What is it?” Daniel asked.

“I expected her to be here.”

“She can’t get inside.”

“I know. My body doesn’t.”

Daniel understood.

Fear did not leave simply because the locks changed.

He guided Olivia to the bedroom and brought her water, medication and food. He set alarms for every prescription and feeding.

He contacted his employer and took six weeks of family leave.

When Olivia apologized for needing help, he stopped her.

“You don’t have to earn rest.”

She looked at him as though no one had ever said those words to her.

That afternoon, Karen completed the CPS home inspection. The refrigerator was stocked. The nursery was safe. Medical records confirmed Olivia had no alcohol in her system.

The case was closed as unfounded.

But Karen offered one final warning.

“False reports sometimes escalate when they fail.”

That evening, Aunt Linda appeared at the front gate.

Daniel spoke to her through the security intercom.

“I’m not letting anyone inside.”

“I understand,” Linda said. “I came to give you something.”

She held up a phone.

“At dinner, Rachel recorded part of what happened. Patricia ordered her to delete it.”

“Did she?”

“No.”

Linda sent Daniel the video.

It showed Olivia standing unsteadily at the stove while Patricia sat at the table drinking wine.

Olivia said, “I need to lie down.”

Patricia replied, “You will sit when the family has eaten.”

Then one of the relatives laughed.

Daniel recognized the voice.

It belonged to Aunt Linda.
