Chapter 10 - THE MAN IN THE COFFIN ROOM

Bruno survived surgery.
The bullet missed his lungs by less than an inch.
He remained at the veterinary hospital under armed guard.
Children from the ferry sent drawings.
Most showed a giant black dog carrying them out of the river.
One showed Bruno with wings.
Elena woke fully two days later.
Her first clear question was about him.
“Is the dog okay?”
I showed her a photograph from the hospital.
Bruno wore a bandage around his chest and looked deeply offended by the medical cone around his neck.
Elena smiled.
It was the first smile anyone had seen since the accident.
Then she asked whether Marco was dead.
“Yes.”
“Did he say sorry?”
I considered lying.
“No.”
“He helped stop a bomb before he died.”
She looked toward the window.
“He still chased me.”
“Yes.”
Adults often want children to accept a final good act as a clean ending.
Elena did not owe Marco that.
Agent Shaw questioned her gently.
Elena explained that she saw the blue truck after leaving an art class.
Marco opened the rear door.
She heard girls crying.
She recorded the scene.
Sofia spotted her.
Marco followed Elena toward the intersection.
He grabbed her backpack.
She bit his hand.
He struck her with the metal edge of his gun.
The blow caused the skull fracture.
Elena ran into the street.
Harlan’s car hit her intentionally.
It did not kill her.
Dr. Crane’s private ambulance arrived before city paramedics.
They sedated her.
They told her parents she had died at the hospital.
“Why put the card inside her?” Shaw asked.
Elena touched the bandage behind her ear.
“A nurse did it.”
“What nurse?”
“She said her name was Carla.”
Carla Ruiz worked at Crane’s clinic.
Federal agents found her hiding inside a church shelter.
She surrendered the moment she learned Elena was alive.
Carla had discovered the girl’s phone inside the ambulance.
She copied the files onto a memory card.
Crane ordered her to prepare Elena for a false death declaration.
Carla knew she could not carry the evidence out.
She placed it beneath Elena’s skin while pretending to repair the wound behind her ear.
“Why didn’t she rescue Elena?” Tomas asked.
Carla answered through tears.
“Dr. Crane had my son.”
Her seventeen-year-old son had been taken after she threatened to expose the clinic.
He was one of the children recovered from the ferry.
The chain of fear stretched through every person involved.
Marco obeyed because Sofia held his sons.
Angela obeyed because Harlan threatened Marco.
Carla obeyed because Crane held her child.
Fear explained how the machine functioned.
Greed explained why it had been built.
Federal agents raided Dr. Crane’s funeral-home network.
Eight funeral homes had hidden rooms beneath their preparation areas.
Traffickers used coffins to move sedated children past checkpoints.
Fake death certificates made missing children legally invisible.
Elena’s funeral was supposed to accomplish two things.
Hide a living witness.
Move her body to a crematory controlled by Harlan.
Bruno interrupted the transfer because he heard her breathing.
The funeral director claimed ignorance.
Records proved otherwise.
He had received fifty thousand dollars for every sealed coffin.
My cousin Carlo had discovered the same system years earlier.
He tried to tell me.
I had been too busy fighting another crew to meet him.
Marco reached him first.

The betrayal had not begun with Elena.
It had begun the day I treated Carlo’s warning like a problem that could wait.
