CHAPTER 2 — THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

I didn’t cry in the car.
Not when I started the engine.
Not when I left their street behind.
Not even when my cheek still burned like a brand.
I just sat there, gripping the steering wheel, watching my reflection in the rearview mirror.
Half a bride.
Half a stranger.
Then I called my father.
He picked up on the first ring.
“Did it happen?” he asked.
I paused.
“Yes.”
A long silence followed. The kind of silence that doesn’t ask questions—it confirms them.
“Where are you?” he finally said.
“Leaving Oak Park.”
Another pause.
Then his voice changed.
Not loud.
Not emotional.
May you like
Just cold.
“Good. Don’t go back.”
