Chapter 18 - The Recording

Gregory sent the file to investigators.

The recording had been made accidentally by the voice memo application on his phone six weeks before our wedding.

Howard’s voice was unmistakable.

Once she signs the medical authority, the rest becomes easy.

Gregory answered.

And if she doesn’t sign?

Then you create the incident.

A pause.

She has combat training.

Howard laughed.

Exactly.

Another pause.

Provoke her.

My stomach twisted.

Make her react.

The baseball bat.

You only need one bruise, one witness, one security report.

Gregory’s voice sounded uncertain.

What if she hurts me badly?

Howard answered without hesitation.

Then she proves our case for us.

I finally understood why Gregory kept pushing me.

Why he seemed almost disappointed when I disarmed him without striking.

He needed me to lose control.

My greatest weapon had been restraint.

The recording continued.

Gregory asked, What happens after the clinic?

Howard answered.

You become her legal decision-maker.

Then:

We control whatever she knows about the acquisition.

Then the final sentence.

And eventually, people forget unstable women.

The room went silent.

Agent Chen stopped the recording.

Naomi looked sick.

I felt something different.

Relief.

Not because the danger was over.

Because the truth had finally become simple.

I had spent days wondering whether I had misread moments.

Whether Gregory’s behavior had escalated unexpectedly.

Whether I should have recognized warning signs sooner.

Now there was no fog.

No ambiguity.

No story he could rewrite.

He had discussed the plan before marrying me.

Gregory requested immunity.

He did not receive it.

He received consideration for cooperation.

Federal warrants expanded.

Howard Hartman was arrested three days later on financial, fraud, obstruction, and conspiracy-related allegations while additional investigations continued.

Several professionals connected to the private clinics were charged separately.

The Hartman board removed Howard.

Margaret petitioned to restore full control of her trust.

Claire’s sealed medical case was reopened.

So were others.

And Gregory?

Gregory believed cooperation would save him.

For forty-eight hours, he appeared almost cheerful in court.

Then prosecutors introduced one final piece of evidence.

A message Gregory had sent Howard the night before our wedding.

Tomorrow she becomes mine.

Another followed.

If she fights, I know exactly how to make her look dangerous.

Gregory’s expression changed.

His attorney whispered urgently.

The prosecutor continued reading.

Then the final text appeared on the courtroom screen.

Dad, relax.

May you like

I learned from you.
