Chapter 12 - My Father’s Final Letter

Ryan denied having the succession letter.

Nathan knew he did.

Federal investigators found a photograph of it on Nathan’s phone.

Only the first page was visible.

Dad’s signature appeared at the bottom.

The document was dated three days before his death.

It began:

To the Board of Cross Meridian Systems.

Leadership of this company must never become a reward for inheritance.

I could almost hear his voice.

The second page was missing.

Ryan’s devices contained no obvious copy.

Then Daniel remembered something.

“The evidence box.”

I stared at him.

We returned to the wooden box that had held my medals.

The interior lining lifted.

Beneath it was a folded piece of paper.

Not the letter.

A key.

Small.

Brass.

Numbered 209.

Dad had hidden clues like an engineer.

Not because he enjoyed puzzles.

Because he did not trust digital systems once he discovered internal theft.

Key 209 belonged to a private safe-deposit facility.

The account was in Michael Cross’s name.

I had been listed as successor access.

Inside the box was the original succession letter.

All three pages.

Dad wrote that Ryan should remain a shareholder but never hold sole executive authority unless an independent audit cleared him of the suspicious transfers.

It never did.

He directed the board to appoint me interim chair after his death.

Then he wrote one paragraph that destroyed Ryan’s central argument.

Claire has never asked me for Cross Meridian.

That is one reason I trust her with it.

I had to stop reading.

Daniel looked away to give me privacy.

The final paragraph was personal.

Ryan is my son.

I love him.

But love does not require blindness.

My hands tightened around the paper.

Dad had known.

He had seen Ryan clearly.

And he had still loved him.

That felt more painful than anger.

The letter was authenticated.

Its paper.

Ink.

Signature.

Safe-deposit custody log.

Everything matched.

The board accepted it.

The probate court admitted it into the estate proceedings.

Ryan’s claim to controlling authority weakened almost beyond repair.

Then the independent audit exposed Martin.

He had not disappeared because he feared prosecution.

He had disappeared because Ryan paid him to leave.

A transfer of $750,000 had been sent two days before Martin vanished.

Investigators traced him to a rented house three states away.

He was arrested without incident.

Martin requested counsel.

By the next morning, he was negotiating cooperation.

Ryan’s circle was collapsing.

Nathan had turned.

Martin was turning.

My mother had confessed to the fake will.

Only Ryan continued insisting everyone else had betrayed him.

Then Martin gave investigators a password.

It opened a hidden Cross Meridian finance archive.

Inside was one final spreadsheet.

The first column contained payments.

The second contained shell companies.

The third contained names.

At the bottom was an entry made five days before Dad died.

PROJECT CROWN - $15,000,000.

The recipient was not Orion.

Not Nathan.

Not Martin.

The recipient was Ryan personally.

And the note beside it read:

May you like

Upon M.C. incapacity.
