Chapter 4: The Aftermath

The silence in the bedroom was sudden and heavy, broken only by Sarah’s jagged breathing and the distant, wailing sound of approaching sirens.

She didn't look at David again. She stepped over his body and ran to the bathroom door.

"Lily? Baby, it's me. It's Mom. Open the door."

A moment passed, agonizingly slow. Then, the lock clicked. The door opened to reveal Lily, shivering violently, her knees pulled to her chest. Sarah collapsed to the floor, pulling her daughter into a desperate, crushing embrace. She buried her face in Lily's hair, finally letting the tears fall.

"I've got you. It's over. He's never going to hurt you again," Sarah sobbed, rocking her back and forth.

Outside, tires screeched on the asphalt. Red and blue lights began to flash wildly through the bedroom window, painting the walls in frantic colors. Heavy boots thundered up the stairs.

"Police! Drop your weapons!" a voice boomed from the hallway.

Two officers burst through the ruined doorway, guns drawn, flashlights cutting through the dust. They immediately spotted David on the floor and moved in, shouting commands, but Sarah barely heard them. The metallic click of handcuffs snapping around David's wrists was the only sound that registered.

An hour later, Sarah sat on the back bumper of an ambulance, a thick wool blanket draped over her shoulders. The crisp night air bit at her face, but she felt entirely numb.

Inside the ambulance, a paramedic was gently cleaning the blood from Lily's face, placing a small bandage over the bridge of her nose. Lily looked up, her swollen eyes finding her mother in the flashing lights.

Sarah climbed up into the back of the ambulance, ignoring the ache in her throat and the bruises forming on her arms. She reached out, taking Lily's small, fragile hand in hers.

"Are we safe now, Mommy?" Lily asked, her voice raspy.

Sarah looked out at the street. Two officers were shoving David into the back of a squad car. He didn't look back. He was gone. The house was a crime scene, the door was shattered, and their lives were permanently scarred—but they were alive.

She looked back down at her daughter, her thumb gently stroking the back of Lily's hand.

"Yeah, baby," Sarah said softly, the fierce, protective steel returning to her voice. "We're safe."
