CHAPTER 3: The Secret in the Garage

Valeria did not want to talk.

She sat on the nursery bed with a blanket around her shoulders, staring at the cup of hot chocolate Alejandro had made himself.

Her sisters slept nearby, exhausted from food, warmth, and safety.

Alejandro knelt in front of her.

“Valeria,” he said softly. “You are not in trouble.”

Her lower lip trembled.

“Mom Jimena said if I told, Sofía would go away.”

Alejandro closed his eyes for one second.

Then he opened them.

“No one is taking Sofía. No one is taking any of you.”

Valeria looked toward the door.

“Promise?”

Alejandro held out his hand.

“I promise on your mother’s memory.”

That reached her.

Valeria whispered, “I saw Uncle Bruno.”

Alejandro went still.

“In the garage?”

She nodded.

“He was putting boxes in the black truck. Nanny Elena was crying. She said she was calling you.”

Alejandro’s blood turned cold.

“What happened after that?”

“Mom Jimena took Nanny Elena’s phone. Then Uncle Bruno pushed her into the car.”

Alejandro stopped breathing.

Valeria’s eyes filled with tears.

“She never came back.”

Within minutes, police were in the garage.

A hidden storage room was found behind a wall of holiday decorations.

Inside were boxes filled with stolen jewelry, signed checks, children’s medical records, nanny contracts, forged resignation letters, and a burner phone.

Mariana found the final piece.

A legal document.

A petition to declare Alejandro emotionally absent and transfer temporary guardianship of the girls to Jimena.

His hands tightened around the paper.

“She was trying to take them.”

Mariana nodded.

“And with enough staged evidence, she might have succeeded.”

Then Doctor Herrera entered, his expression grave.

“The girls are malnourished. Not severely enough to require hospitalization, but enough to prove neglect. There are signs of prolonged food restriction and stress.”

Alejandro looked toward the ceiling, where his daughters slept.

He felt something inside him break.

For months, he had believed his absence was sacrifice.

Now he understood.

Absence had become permission.

He turned to Mariana.

“File everything tonight.”

“Emergency custody?”

“Full protection order. Divorce. Criminal complaint. Freeze every account she touched.”

Mariana nodded.

“And Bruno?”

Alejandro looked toward the police.

“Find him.”

They found Bruno two hours later at a private airport.

He had two suitcases, fifty thousand dollars in cash, and forged passports.

Jimena’s name was on one ticket.

When police brought him into the mansion, Jimena was still shouting in the foyer.

The moment she saw her brother in handcuffs, she stopped.

Bruno looked at her.

“You said he wouldn’t come home until New Year’s.”

Alejandro’s eyes slowly moved to Jimena.

That single sentence ended everything.

Jimena tried to recover.

“He’s lying.”

Bruno laughed.

“You told me the girls were easy to scare.”

The police officer beside him tightened his grip.

Jimena screamed, “Shut up!”

But it was too late.

Alejandro stepped forward.

For a moment, everyone thought he might lose control.

He did not.

That was what made him dangerous.

He simply looked at Jimena and said, “You will never see my daughters again.”

Jimena’s face collapsed.

Not because she loved them.

Because she understood the money was gone.

The diamonds were gone.

The mansion was gone.

And the name Santillán no longer protected her.

As officers led her outside, snow began falling over Las Lomas.

Inside the mansion, the Christmas tree still glowed.

But Alejandro did not feel Christmas.

Not yet.

He walked upstairs and found all four girls awake.

Valeria looked at him.

“Is she coming back?”

Alejandro sat beside them.

“No.”

Camila whispered, “Are you leaving again?”

That question hurt worse than all the others.

Alejandro removed his tie and placed his phone on the nightstand.

Then he said the words his daughters needed more than gifts.

“No, my loves. I’m home.”
