Chapter 12: The Fallout

The media storm hit with the force of a category-five hurricane. By 5:00 PM that evening, the financial news networks were running absolute wall-to-wall coverage. "Sterling Corp Board Arrested in Massive Embezzlement Ring" flashed in bold, urgent chyrons across millions of screens. Choppers circled the corporate headquarters, and satellite trucks jammed the street outside the lobby.
Marcus stood at the podium in the ground-floor press room, facing a blinding barrage of camera flashes. He did not dodge questions. He did not hide behind corporate jargon or a phalanx of defense attorneys. He faced the cameras with the icy, unyielding resolve of a wartime general.
"The Sterling Corporation has been the victim of a highly sophisticated, long-term fraud orchestrated by our former Chief Financial Officer and several complicit board members," Marcus announced into a thick cluster of microphones, his voice projecting absolute authority. "We cooperated fully with the FBI to root out this corruption. The individuals responsible are in federal custody. The company's core assets are secure, and we are initiating an immediate, independent, top-to-bottom audit."
He fielded questions for an hour, stabilizing the narrative, projecting strength when the market expected panic. When it was finally over, he retreated to his waiting black SUV, exhausted but resolute.
An hour later, Marcus walked into the quiet sanctuary of Elena’s hospital room at Cedar-Sinai. The contrast between the chaotic press room and the steady, synthesized rhythm of the heart monitor was jarring. Elena was sitting up slightly, watching a muted television screen that showed Marcus speaking at the podium.
"You handled them well," Elena said, her voice stronger than the day before, though she still winced when she shifted her weight. "The stock took an eight percent hit in after-hours trading. It could have been much worse."
"It will bounce back once the street realizes the bleeding has stopped," Marcus said, pulling up a chair and taking off his suit jacket. He looked at his niece, truly seeing the sharp, brilliant mind behind her quiet exterior. "Arthur is facing twenty counts of wire fraud. They arrested two other board members based on the emails they recovered from his private server. It's a clean sweep."
"And Chloe?" Elena asked carefully, watching his face.
"She’s in solitary confinement at the federal detention center. She tried to leverage her testimony against Arthur for house arrest," Marcus stated coldly. "The US Attorney laughed her out of the room since we already handed them Arthur’s direct confession on tape. She has nothing left to trade."

Elena reached out, her hand finding his. "You did the right thing, Uncle Marcus. It was brutal, but it was necessary."
"We did the right thing," Marcus corrected gently, squeezing her hand. "You took the physical hit for this family. I won't ever forget that. When you're healed, we need to have a serious conversation about your future at the company. I need someone I can actually trust watching the numbers."
