CHAPTER 2: THE MAID'S SECRET IDENTITY

CHAPTER 2: THE MAID’S SECRET IDENTITY
Time didn’t just slow in the ballroom.
It stopped.
No music.
No movement.
No breath.
Every eye stayed locked on the maid standing near the center of the chaos.
On her.
Or what they thought was her.
Emily’s voice still echoed in the silence.
“Her real name isn’t Sarah.”
The words didn’t fade.
They settled.
Like a weight no one could lift.
Daniel turned slowly toward the maid.
His chest tightened.
Minutes ago, she was the woman who stopped him from drinking poison.
Now she was something else entirely.
Unknown.
Uncertain.
Dangerous.
“What is she talking about?” Daniel asked sharply.
Sarah’s fingers twitched.
Just slightly.
But enough.
For the first time since the chaos began, she looked… unstable.
Not in control.
Not prepared.
Human.
Whispers spread instantly through the crowd.
“Who is she?”
“Was this staged?”
“Is she even real staff?”
Emily let out a short, cutting laugh.
“Go on,” she said. “Tell them.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
A long silence followed.
Not empty.
Heavy.
Then she opened them again.
And looked straight at Daniel.
“My name isn’t Sarah.”
The ballroom exploded.
Gasps. Phones raised higher. Chairs shifting. People leaning in as if truth had physical form.
Daniel didn’t move.
“Then what is it?” he asked.
Her voice trembled.
“My name… is Sophia.”
Silence dropped instantly.
Not confusion this time.
Recognition didn’t come from the crowd.
It came from one person.
Daniel’s mother.
She went rigid.
The glass in her hand slipped.
It hit the marble.
CRASH.
Every head turned.
Her face had gone completely white.
“No…” she whispered.
Daniel frowned.
“Mom?”
Her lips shook.
“No… that’s not possible.”
Sophia looked down.
Tears welled in her eyes.
Daniel’s confusion sharpened into something colder.
“What is going on here?”
His mother stepped forward like she was walking through a nightmare.
Her voice barely held together.
“Sophia died eighteen years ago.”
The ballroom shattered into noise.
Shock. Disbelief. Panic.
Daniel’s breath caught.
“What?”
His mother didn’t look at him.
She couldn’t.
“I saw her funeral,” she said.
The air changed.
Cold. Sudden. Wrong.
Sophia lowered her head.
For a moment, she looked exhausted.
Not like a spy.
Not like a liar.
Like someone carrying a truth too heavy to keep buried.
“I didn’t die,” she said quietly.
Silence returned instantly.
“They made sure everyone believed I did.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Who are you talking about?”
Her breath shook.
“Eighteen years ago… my father worked for your family.”
Daniel’s mother flinched.
Sophia continued.
“He was your father’s financial advisor.”
The room listened like it was afraid to interrupt reality.
“He discovered something,” Sophia said.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“What kind of something?”
Her eyes lifted slowly.
“To your mother.”
Then to the portrait of Daniel’s late father near the stage.
“A theft.”
The word hit like a gunshot.
Gasps rippled through the guests.
Sophia didn’t stop.
“Millions were moved out of company accounts.”
Daniel’s mind refused it.
Impossible.
His father’s empire was built on reputation.
On control.
On precision.
Sophia stepped forward slightly.
“My father gathered proof.”
Her voice hardened.
“He was going to expose everything.”
Daniel’s stomach sank.
“And then?”
Sophia swallowed.
“He died.”
The room went still again.
“They called it an accident,” she said.
A colder silence followed.
“But it wasn’t.”
Daniel’s mother swayed slightly.
Sophia’s hands clenched.
“He was silenced.”
The ballroom erupted into whispers again, louder now, more chaotic.
Daniel’s voice turned sharp.
“You’re saying he was murdered?”
Sophia nodded.
“Yes.”
The word landed like finality.
Daniel felt something inside him fracture.
Everything he believed about his family… cracked.
Then Emily snapped.
“Oh, please.”
Every head turned.
She stepped forward, eyes burning.
“You expect us to believe this story?”
Sophia didn’t react.
Emily continued.
“Where’s your proof?”
Silence again.
For a brief moment, it looked like control had shifted back.
Emily had hope.
That hope died quickly.
Sophia reached into her bag.
And pulled out a metal flash drive.
The room reacted instantly.
Gasps. Movement. Fear.
Emily froze.
Sophia held it up.
“My father left this.”
Daniel’s eyes locked onto it.
Sophia’s voice strengthened.
“He recorded everything.”
She turned slightly.
“Bank transfers.”
She lifted it.
“Account records.”
Higher.
“Names.”
The air grew tighter.
Then she said it.
“And murders.”
The ballroom broke.
Emily stepped back.
Michael stiffened.
Daniel’s pulse spiked.
Sophia’s gaze locked onto Michael.
“You already know what’s on it.”
Michael laughed—too fast.
Too forced.
“That’s ridiculous.”
But his voice didn’t carry certainty.
Only panic.
Sophia stepped closer.
“Is it?”
Michael shifted back.
Daniel watched carefully now.
Not emotionally.
Not blindly.
For the first time…
he observed.
Sophia’s voice sharpened.
“Why have you been searching for this drive?”
The room turned fully on Michael.
Sweat appeared at his temple.
“I don’t know what she’s talking about.”
No one believed him.
Not anymore.
Sophia turned slightly toward Daniel.
“There’s something you need to understand.”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“What?”
She hesitated.
Not from doubt.
From weight.
Then she said it.
“Emily was never the mastermind.”
Emily’s head snapped up.
“What?”
Shock replaced anger.
Confusion spread across the room.
Sophia pointed directly at Michael.
“He was.”
The explosion that followed wasn’t metaphorical.
It was real.
Voices. Chaos. Accusations. Phones recording everything.
Michael slammed his hand on the table.
“Enough!”
Silence dropped instantly.
His face had changed.
The friendly mask was gone.
So was the charm.
What remained was something sharper.
Colder.
Stripped.
For the first time, everyone saw him clearly.
And it was not the man they knew.
He looked at Sophia.
“You should have stayed dead.”
The words froze the room.
Daniel’s heart stopped.
Sophia’s face drained of color.
Michael realized it instantly.
Too late.
Too exposed.
Silence became suffocating.
Daniel stepped back slightly.
Something inside him broke completely.
Because only one kind of man says that—
A guilty one.
Sophia whispered:
“So it was you.”
Michael didn’t answer.
But his silence did.
Then—
A security guard burst into the ballroom.
Out of breath.
Eyes wide.
Panic in every step.
“Someone broke into the evidence room!”
Gasps exploded.
Sophia stiffened instantly.
The flash drive shifted in her hand.
The guard pointed outside.
“They were looking for that drive!”
The room erupted again.
Fear replaced shock.
Then a voice came from outside.
Not close.
Not familiar.
But loud enough to freeze blood.
“GET HER!”
Sophia went pale.
Glass shattered somewhere outside.
Then another.
CRASH.
Screams filled the ballroom.
Daniel grabbed Sophia’s arm instinctively.
Because suddenly—
this wasn’t a revelation anymore.
It was a pursuit.
Someone had heard everything.
May you like
And they were already inside the grounds.
