Chapter 3: The Little Girl Who Saved More Than One Life

The confrontation happened the next morning.
Lucas summoned Marco to the mansion library.
Floor-to-ceiling windows flooded the room with winter sunlight.
For a moment, it looked almost peaceful.
Then Lucas slid the evidence across the table.
Marco's face went pale.
Neither man spoke.
Finally, Marco laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
"I built this empire while you played house with your wife and son."
Lucas felt his hands shake.
"You killed them."
"They were going to take everything away," Marco replied. "You were leaving. The empire would have fallen apart. I couldn't allow that."
Lucas had faced armed rivals, federal investigations, and men who wanted him dead.
Nothing had ever hurt like those words.
Guards entered the room.
Marco did not resist.
As he was led away in handcuffs, he looked toward the staircase where Lily stood holding her stuffed rabbit.
"If she hadn't saved you," Marco muttered, "none of this would've happened."
For the first time, Lucas understood.
A little girl with a failing inhaler had done what powerful men could not.
She had uncovered the truth.
Six months later, the Moretti mansion was no longer guarded by fear.
Lucas created the Isabella and Daniel Foundation, providing medical care for children whose families couldn't afford treatment.
The first child it helped was Lily.
Her asthma treatments were fully covered.
On the foundation's opening day, reporters asked Lucas why he had chosen a little maid's daughter as the guest of honor.
Lucas smiled and looked at Lily.
"Because heroes don't always wear uniforms."
Lily squeezed her stuffed rabbit.
"Did I really save you, Mister?"
Lucas knelt beside her.
"You saved me twice."
She tilted her head.
"Twice?"
"The first time, you saved my life."
His eyes drifted toward a photograph of Isabella and Daniel.
"The second time, you gave me the truth."
For the first time in three years, Lucas felt something he thought he had lost forever.
Peace.
