CHAPTER 3 — The Name Hidden Inside the File

Three nights later Hannah couldn't sleep.
Rain tapped softly against the attic windows.
She walked carefully through the library carrying a tray of untouched tea.
One drawer had been left slightly open.
Inside rested a thick black folder.
Across the cover were two words.
Harbor Ledger.
Her heart nearly stopped.
Caleb had used those exact words during his final phone call.
Hands shaking, she opened the folder.
Shipping invoices.
Offshore transfers.
Fake construction companies.
Millions of dollars moving beneath legitimate businesses.
One page froze her blood.
Aaron Brooks.
Payment authorized.
Status:
Eliminated after discovery.
The tray slipped from her hands.
Porcelain exploded across the hardwood floor.
Lights switched on.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
His eyes moved from the shattered cup...
...to the open file.
He understood immediately.
"You weren't looking for work when you came here."
Hannah backed away.
"I know what happened to my husband."
"No."
Daniel's face darkened.
"You know what someone wanted you to believe."
She held up the page.
"It says Aaron was eliminated."
Daniel crossed the room and snatched another document beneath it.
A second page.
One she had never seen.
Signed only twelve hours after the first.
Unauthorized use of Carver seal. Investigation ordered.
Daniel whispered,
May you like
"My God..."
Someone inside his own organization had been using his name to murder innocent people.
