Chapter 18 - Four Years Later

Four years passed.
The DeLuca estate changed.
The hidden rooms were opened.
The walls were repainted.
The blue room became a library.
The ballroom became a charity venue.
Every November, Claire hosted a children's dance fundraiser there.
On the fourth anniversary of Cassandra's conviction, Lily stood in the center of the marble floor.
She was eight now.
Taller.
Brighter.
Confident.
Three hundred guests watched.
But there were no politicians this time.
No criminals.
No secret meetings.
Only children, teachers, families, and donors.
Lily wore a blue dress.
Julian stood beside Claire.
Nora stood near the piano.
The music began.
Lily danced.
One turn.
Then another.
Then the bluebird turn.
Julian smiled.
Claire cried.
When the performance ended, the room erupted into applause.
Lily looked toward her parents.
Julian mouthed,
“I love you.”
She smiled.
Then she ran toward him.
“Daddy.”
He lifted her.
“You were amazing.”
“I almost fell.”
“I saw.”
“But I kept going.”
Julian kissed her forehead.
“That is the important part.”
Claire joined them.
For a moment, the three of them stood beneath the same chandeliers where everything had once fallen apart.
Only now, nothing was broken.
The lake outside reflected the winter moon.
The house was quiet.
Peaceful.
Safe.
Then Lily looked toward the old west wing.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Is there still a secret room?”
Julian smiled.
“No.”
Lily narrowed her eyes.
“Are you sure?”
Claire laughed.
“I taught her to ask questions.”
Julian sighed.
May you like
“I noticed.”
